Mysterious disease that kills patients within 24 hours leaves at least 18 dead in Nigeria
www.abc.net.au ^ | 18 April 2015 | AFP

"Seventeen people have died of the mysterious disease since it broke out early this week in Ode-Irele town," said Ondo state government spokesman Kayode Akinmade.

The disease, symptoms of which include headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, killed the victims within 24 hours of their falling ill, he said.

Laboratory tests have so far ruled out Ebola or any other virus, Mr Akinmade added.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said it had information on 14 cases with at least 12 dead.

"Common symptoms were sudden blurred vision, headache, loss of consciousness followed by death, occurring within 24 hours," spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said.

Another WHO spokesman, Gregory Hartl, told AFP that according to a preliminary report, all those affected began showing symptoms between April 13 and 15.

Mr Akinmade said health officials and experts from the government and aid agencies, as well as WHO epidemiologists, had arrived in Ode-Irele to search for answers.

"There is no patient of the disease in any hospital and the disease has not spread beyond the town," he said.

Ondo state health commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, told AFP that he and his officials went on a "field visit" with the WHO, UNICEF and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

"This was basically a case search to unravel the cause [of the disease]," he said.

I couldn’t imagine losing my job in this economy; the house would be on the market fairly quickly because replacing that income (never mind the insurance benefits) would be practically impossible.

The turnover of classmates in my kids’ classes is something completely alien to me (as Americans follow jobs elsewhere and are replaced by foreigners under our de facto amnesty).

It appears the reservoir for the disease is fruit bats, which are migratory. Most likely, those migration patterns influence outbreaks of Ebola, and to a lesser extent Marburg. Actually contracting the disease would be a crapshoot (for the index case), and appears to be related to caretaking and funerary practices for the infected for the most part during an outbreak.

Aside from the cultural factors, there may be some inherent or acquired immunity to the disease there as well, much as cowpox exposed Europeans were more likely to ward off smallpox.

There is still a lot of research to be done, and the understanding of the disease from the current (if waning) outbreak won't be all published for a couple of years yet.

We are witnessing the destruction of the middle class.

It’s planned, and there’s not intent to stop it or even slow it down.

I know exactly what you mean.

the weight loss part must be a mistake. Hard to lose much weight if you are dead in 24 hours. Sounds like a toxin or an overwhelming CNS infection.

Probably not a disease ... probably poisoning - methanol poisoning - classic symptoms blurred vision, etc. ... home brewed whiskey ... bad batch ... village party ...

Happens in undeveloped countries ...

I ate an amoeba in Mexico City once. It was hiding in a tamale. I got dysentery and easily lost ten pounds the first day, twenty pounds in three days, and more than twenty five pounds before I got over it. I was a big boned six foot and 190 pounds of muscle back then and did not have much to lose in the first place.

Sudden outbreak in a very limited area. Sounds like food poisoning or some other type of toxic exposure.’

>>Sounds more like botulism with the blurry vision.

Good note there. I don’t think botulism would have killed that many, but who knows.

My most honorable associate of General Smith of Dugway Proving Grounds can discretely sell them most advanced cure for $10,000,000 with only $10,000 advanced credit, with their banking credentials. I am telling you this in strictest confidence...

I once had a neighbor who’s illegal yard servants sprayed what they thought was Miracle Grow all over his landscaping. Turned out they used Roundup by mistake.

Instapundit had this earlier today. It sounds like the “English Sweat” which is going to get some attention because of the Masterpiece Theatre “Wolf Hall” series they are showing.

Thomas Cromwell’s wife and 2 daughters died of this. It really freaked me out when I read the book and it really freaked hubby out when we watched the TV show.

Basically: there you are, all fine and dandy, then you are a tad under the weather then you are pretty sick, maybe raving or delusional, and then you are stone cold dead, and that’s the next day - or later in the same day.

I googled it and what some think is that “the sweat” was a version of hanta virus, which is bad and led to some unexplicable deaths in the American Southwest not too long ago.

So, there’s my 2 cents, fwiw.
