Dude, that’s harsh. I favor wood chippers; you can then use the resulting hamburger and bone meal as fertilizer.

Actually, a prisoner in Arizona discovered how to make death in the gas chamber excruciatingly painful. The idea of the gas chamber is that the prisoner will hold his breath until he cannot help himself, inhale the gas and immediately pass out.

This prisoner just continued to breathe normally. In the case of hydrogen cyanide, which they used, cyanide is a “blood agent”, that binds with the hemoglobin in the blood so it cannot transport oxygen. But the body has an “emergency shutdown” if you suddenly inhale a lot of it.

But if you inhale increasing amounts of it with normal breathing, you turn bright red, you start panting and choking and struggling, and are eventually suffocated to death. Pretty agonizing.

Nitrogen will be just as bad, because outside of that emergency shutdown, that is, if the prisoner continues to breathe normally, the effect will be like breathing from and into a plastic bag around your mouth as the carbon dioxide levels increase. Not pleasant.

There might be a way around this problem, with the head of the prisoner suddenly put in a container full of just nitrogen gas.

Something like this almost happened to David Letterman, with the idea of an “Alka-Seltzer Suit” on him, lowered into a tank of water. But first they tested the idea with a member of the crew. As soon as he was lowered into the water, the air around his head quickly became 100% carbon dioxide, and he passed out. It was not easy to revive him and he could have died. So when Letterman went into the tank, he was wearing an oxygen tank and had a breathing device.

In any event, this is why I am a big fan of firing squads. Quick, easy, no skill or unusual anything needed. Any lawman can be on the squad.

Before nitrogen, they ought to use a lead sedative to the head before the exposure.

I’ve done the hypoxia training, it is euphoric, but I reckoned I wasn’t going to die. It’s like getting drunk, without the hangover.

Modern cars emit less than 1% of the CO of cars from the 90s and earlier.

No problem, use a vintage car, or a Chinese import.

Quick, cheap, and painless.

Too messy.

No way to know if it’s effective? Did someone really say that?

There is lots of industrial experience with nitrogen. The air we breathe is 78% nitrogen (plus 1% argon, 21% oxygen, and some trace gases like CO2). Pure nitrogen is definitely a killer. Lots of people have died this way by accident. They just lose consciousness. There isn’t even time to try to escape.

Air is 78% nitrogen. Nitrogen is harmless and inert. Nitrogen asphyxiation is achieved by replacing air (which is about 20% oxygen) with pure nitrogen. The victim breaths normally, but the oxygen in the blood is not replaced, and soon the victim dies, painlessly. Respiratory distress is caused by concentration of CO2 in blood. Breathing pure nitrogen is painless, the victim gradually passes out and then dies. It might take some time, but what’s the rush, they usually spend thirty years on death row, so what’s another 30 minutes?

Yea, let’s see them block that.
