Parents criticized Indiana school officials Thursday for a trip planned to local colleges that was only offered to black third-graders, ABC 57 reported.
School officials defended the trip, saying the outing sends a positive message to black students who may believe the prospect of college is out of reach.
"We take them to a college campus, have them meet African-American students, modeling the idea that as a black person, college is a great place," Dr. G. David Moss, the head of the African-American services at the South Bend Community Schools Corporation, told the station.
The initiative has been criticized by parents in the community, not because of its ambitions, but because it excludes students with other backgrounds.
One parent whose son is going on the trip told the station that she believes "all kids should be going."

At that age, kids have an innate and strong sense of what is and is not fair. This will teach the black kids that they are entitled to special treatment because they just aren’t up to making it without some extra help. The other kids will resent the blacks because the black kids got something they did not.

My kids went to a Catholic high school. Outreach students from Harvard and a couple of other elite schools came to our school but they only wanted to meet with blacks and other minority students. I was told the counselor’s office went through the list of seniors and invited kids who had hispanic names to the presentation. I called the school and complained, I was paying the same tuition and exclusion of any kids was inappropiate. Supposedly, the now have a policy that such presentations must be open to all students. I’m not so sure.
3rd grade? You got to be kidding me. A 3rd grader is so far away from collage that this is wasted time. Focus on teaching them! Not to mention biased/racist application of who was and who wasn’t able to go. More liberal B.S.
With the hooligans gone, the remaining kids can finally focus on learning.
