April 17

On 14 April I rejoined the 232 Regimental advance command post. For anyone interested. The City of Schweinfurt has a site of pictures called the Third Reich in Ruins, including Schweinfurt. Very good before and after pictures of war at http://www.thirdreichruins.com/schweinfurt5.htm

I’ll summarize 14 April, 15 April, 16 April. At this time we pursed the enemy with little contact. Strong patrols were put out to locate the enemy. The CP moved rapidly through Willenshein, Markt Bihart Unter Esselbach then Schellert. Advance elements of the 12th Armored Division joined us. At approximately 1430 warning orders were issued to the regiment to be prepared to shift to the right, to allow the 242d Infantry to enter on the left flank.
At about 2300 the battalions were ordered to move from assembly areas and to attack to the southwest. The First Battalion was ordered at 0200 to move into an assembly area as regimental reserve. The Second and Third Battalions jumped off at 0400 moving abreast of the division right flank. Displacing resistance of small arms and machine gun fire, the battalion advanced approximately 11,000 yards to the East.
Preparing to attack Cadizburg, the Third Battalion found the town already under attack by the companies of CCA, 64th Armored Infantry which had moved in from the north. A coordinated effort was made, and against moderate to heavy resistance, the town was finally occupied with the responsibility for the capture divided between the Third Battalion and elements of the CCA.
The Second Battalion on the right encountered enemy resistance on the high ground 500 yards northwest of their final objective. It was quickly overcome, and the battalion moved onto its objective, sending out motorized patrols to the southeast to investigate the woods and road nets. The First Battalion protected the right rear of the regimental sector.

All in all what this adds up to is the enemy gathering and our gathering to take Nurmberg before Munich [or Munchen as the Germans called it]
