Ethnic Constructs Are Pointless In Our Multiracial Society
Townhall.com ^ | April 16, 2015 | Victor Davis Hanson

Not long ago, the New York Times uncovered the artifact that Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush had once listed himself as "Hispanic" on a Florida voter registration form.

Bush is married to a Mexican-American. He lived for a number of years in South America and speaks Spanish fluently.

Maybe he has consciously assumed a Hispanic identity. Or perhaps he did not think there was much of a difference between "white" and "Hispanic." Or, as he said, he simply checked the wrong box by accident.

Vijay Chokal-Ingam, whose family immigrated from India, and who is the brother of sitcom actress Mindy Kaling, recently confessed that he, too, once changed his ethnic identity in frustration over not being admitted to medical school. The dark-skinned Chokal-Ingam shaved his head, used his middle name Jojo, and was admitted to Saint Louis Medical School as a minority African-American. Was he or was he not "black"?

If you can choose your sex then why not your ethnicity? I am now African American, and you would not believe the micro aggressions I have received lately.

Well, apparently people today can just decide that they’re another gender. Given that, deciding that you’re really of another race is not really a stretch.

A former colleague of mine married a man from the Carribean. He is of a very diverse ancestry...African, Indian, Chinese...etc. Her kids are a mix of so many things ethnically it is virtually impossible for them to self-select a race on those stupid government forms.

The best illustration I know of why this is all so bloody stupid.

“He lived for a number of years in South America and speaks Spanish fluently.”

We got the fake republican president then we got the
communist president and then another fake republican then
came the fascist muslim president and now they want to
give us another fake republican president with a meskin twist.

The last real American president war Reagan.
Are we ever going to get another honest,
“real” American president?

Reminds me of many earlier VDH articles ... including Illiberal Immigration ...

Even the notions of "white" and "Latino" are becoming problematic in today's intermarried and interracial society. Does one-quarter or one-half an ethnic ancestry make one a member of the "minority" or "majority" community -- and, if so, by what logic and under which convenient conditions? For the purposes of hiring or college admission, should we apply one-drop rules from the Old Confederacy to measure our racial purity?

The old liberal ideal of a racially blind, melting-pot society where the law is applied equally across the board has descended into the new postmodern practice of enforcing many laws only selectively -- and based entirely on politics, matters of race, ethnic chauvinism and national origin.
