Marco Rubio: I’d attend a gay wedding
Fusion ^ | 4/15/15 | Brett LoGiurato

Posted on 04/16/2015 3:35:16 AM PDT by markomalley

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), the newest and youngest official Republican candidate for president, has said he believes marriage should be “traditional”—between a man and a woman.

So Fusion’s Jorge Ramos asked him: If someone in his family or on his staff were gay and getting married, would he attend the wedding?

“If it’s somebody in my life that I care for, of course I would,” Rubio told Ramos in an interview on Wednesday.

“I’m not going to hurt them simply because I disagree with a choice they’ve made or because I disagree with a decision they’ve made, or whatever it may be,” he added. “Ultimately, if someone that you care for and is part of your family has decided to move in one direction or another or feels that way because of who they love, you respect that because you love them.”

Rubio spoke with Ramos about a variety of issues, including marriage equality, immigration reform, climate change, President Barack Obama’s move to normalize relations with Cuba, and which rapper or singer he’d like to perform at his potential 2017 inauguration.

In the early throes of his campaign, Rubio has positioned himself as the candidate of “tomorrow.” He has cast himself as a young, fresh alternative to other Republicans and to likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who he referred to in his announcement speech as the candidate of “yesterday.”

But his stance on gay marriage has led to questions on whether he’s more out of touch than Clinton with young people on certain issues. According to a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 74 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds said they were in favor of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. On Tuesday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper called Rubio “the candidate of yesterday” on the issue of marriage equality.

Rubio said that while he personally opposes gay marriage, he would encourage people in favor to petition their state legislatures to permit same-sex marriages. He does not think the decision should be left up to courts, he said.

“I would point out that we live in a free society,” Rubio said. “If people want to change the definition of marriage, they should petition their state legislature, and they can have that debate in the political arena. Who I don’t think should be redefining marriage is the court system.”

Rubio, who is Catholic, noted that his faith also teaches that divorce is wrong, and he drew on that as a comparison to his personal feelings on gay marriage.

“But again, as I said, I’m a member of the Catholic faith that teaches, for example, that divorce is wrong,” Rubio said. “But if someone gets divorced, I’m not going to stop loving them or having them a part of our lives.”

I do agree. I am a Barry Goldwater type or if you will, more of a South Park Libertarian/Conservative. Legally, the matter is left to the State or the people themselves, preferably the latter. Really, the matter does not bother me, I have gay friends who gotten married and I wish them well although on a personal level, I prefer traditional marriage. On the other side, no one should be forced to go against their principles, if a baker does not want to make a cake because of their convictions, then they have that right, the same if the situation was reversed. I think the pushing from all side should stop and everyone respects everyone else's convictions and accept that, accept that people have varying opinions and views. No one should be demonized be they religious, gay, whatever.

That said, you're right, these issues are basically yelling "squirrel" in the movie "Up." Even my gay friends think that way (their favorite animal is squirrels, BTW) about it. We need to work to find the common ground, I pretty much have, where we need to focus on the real issues, the economy, foreign affairs, energy policy, the erosion of our freedoms and so on. If we see one mushroom could above one of our cities, or worse, several, I doubt things like who marriages who or what, who is sleeping with whom and what's next on the Kardashians will be so far down on the list, it will not even register.

Well, I wouldn’t, and I’m not likely to vote for someone who would....so, I guess I wouldn’t vote for him.

And then people will accuse those like us of wanting someone “perfect”.

It’s like choosing between different colors of excrement.

Here are five faith facts about this Catholic son of Cuban immigrants who has also found comfort in Mormonism and a Southern Baptist church:

1. He was once a serious, young Mormon

Rubio’s parents baptized him Catholic and he is now a practicing Catholic, but when he was 8, his family moved from South Florida to Las Vegas, where his mother attributed the wholesomeness of the neighborhood to the influence of the Mormon Church. Young Rubio was baptized again, this time in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent three years as a Mormon, upheld its teachings more enthusiastically than his parents, and chided his father for working as a bartender, a no-no for Mormons who abstain from alcohol.

2. He frequents a Southern Baptist megachurch

Rubio and his wife Jeannette often visit Miami’s Christ Fellowship, a Southern Baptist congregation the couple appreciates for its strong preaching and children’s programs. Rubio has donated at least $50,000 to the church, which he attended almost exclusively from 2000 to 2004. But he now finds his religious home in Catholic churches in Washington, D.C. and Florida. In his memoir, Rubio writes that he will go with his family to Christ Fellowship on Saturday nights, and Mass on Sundays at St. Louis Catholic Church. His children have received First Holy Communion....

Spoken like one of those Catholics that ignore the Bible except for a few cherry-picked verses. Homosexuality wasn’t the only topic in the article - there was also the divorce/remarriage w/o a catholic annulment. What do all the other religions say about that? Is it enough to decide to try to hinder one’s communion with God?

I wonder if we’re making a mountain out of Caesars molehill?

We can look at the history of Western Civilization and learn of the contribution and influence Christianity made. We can also look at various attempts in that history to purge Christianity from from society. We can see what a society influence by a fanatical, bloodthirsty religion looks like today.

I think our best bet is sticking with the traditional values of Western Civilization.

IMO, there are more important issues for a candidate for POTUS than whether he’d attend a “gay” family wedding...like illegals immigrants...over spending...taxes.

I don’t believe that every person in Sodom and Gomorrah was a sexual deviant. It’s my belief that, much like America today, there were many who just went along with all the evil and decided it was okay to do business and “tolerate” what they knew was pure evil. They burned right along with the evildoers. Scripture has much to say about becoming a partaker with evildoers and receiving the same punishment as they do. I think that the “tolerance” that’s being touted by a lot of Christians today will be their downfall.

How about sharing your memories of the “gay” “marriage” you said you were “in”?

Being in Florida is no excuse, as he's claiming right now that he will NOT run for re-election to the US Senate.

Unless maybe you're implying that he's full of crap and will change his mind and run for Senate after all once he's secured the Presidential nomination for his buddy jeb?

Giuliani loves Rubio because Rubio is a devoted advocate of the police state. Rubio has been a great defender of the NSA’s unconstitutional warrantless spying program and generally just shitting all over the Bill of Rights. That’s Giuliani’s number-one issue.

Shame on Rubio for getting suckered into hypotheticals. He should have said he’s never been invited to a gay wedding and don’t know if he ever will, but ho about we talk seriously about defense, or borders, or taxes, or the 2nd amendment...

Yes, the American people don’t understand the word “tolerance”. They think it means they get to do what they want to do.
