Hunger strike by undocumented women at Texas detention facility

A group of 10 undocumented women will start a partial hunger strike this Tuesday to protest against their detention at a center that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has in Karnes City, Texas, according to a non-profit organization which provides legal representation to some of the facility's detainees.

During a conference call held this morning, Mohammad Abdollahi, member and one of the spokespersons of the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), said the women, who have their children with them, "are gonna have one meal a day each evening (during a week), however they are gonna refuse all other meals." Abdollahi added the women participating in the hunger strike will refuse to send their children to the facility's school.

According to Abdollahi and Cristina Parker, a coordinator with Austin-based Grassroots Leadership, this is the second hunger strike at the Karnes facility because a group of almost 80 women started one in the week that started on Monday March 30th that lasted almost one week.
