Mike Miller knows his way around guns.
So the training course required to get a concealed-carry permit in Kansas seemed to him, at first anyway, like a time-wasting technicality.
A box to check off on a form.
But that cocky skepticism vanished during an eight-hour class that dwelled far less on shooting skills than on the weighty legalities and liabilities that come with firing a deadly weapon.
Questions like: When does justifiable homicide cross the line to murder? What are the legal limits of self-defense?
Its a giant responsibility, said Miller, a publicist at the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Thats probably the biggest thing these folks are going to miss.
The folks of whom he speaks are Kansans who might not bother getting that training once a new law takes effect this summer.
As of July 1, no training will be required for someone choosing to holster a hidden gun or shove one into a purse or backpack.
After that date, concealed-gun permits will be strictly voluntary in Kansas.

I can already hear the gnashing of teeth and wailing of voices from liberal gun haters. “Blood will run in the streets.” “There will be shoot outs over parking spaces.”
IMHO, one of the greatest investments one can make before one decides to carry concealed, is to at least one of Mas Ayoob’s books. Many years ago, when I was beginning to think about a CCW permit, I bought a copy of his “In the Greatest Extreme.” However, when I checked Amazon, I didn’t realize that book is 35 years old! Mas has a newer book, and being familiar with him (and having met him once, a long time ago), my guess is the new book is every bit as definitive on the subject, just more up to date. “Deadly Force - Understanding Your Right to Self Defense.”
Put simply, should I ever be involved in a shooting, in the aftermath, I would do all I could to have Mas involved in my defense as an “expert witness!”

Good for Kansas! “...the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed ..
It would be a smart thing to do to have a modicum of training. It would really suck to lose all your assets because of an easily preventable error.
Every one else will ... in all likelihood .. have a .. as you say .. modicum of desire to know a little something about what they want and what they should know
All things considered, I think it's just a reversal of a lot of the unconstitutional gun laws that have piled up over the years and Americans are beginning to push back against the enemies of our state (nation)
We need to send our lawgistlaters to remedial reading classes. They obviously have reading comprehension difficulties.
The Kansas City Star publishes EVERY DAY under the Constitutional protection of the First Amendment. No government agency is permitted to vett their content or decide if their stories are accurate or might harm others.
The editorial board wants the Constitution to apply to THEM but not the citizenry.
1. Legal guns cost more than illegal ones. Always have.
2. Oh, there’s ‘concern’ that people could have guns without training? Fine. Mandatory gun training in schools now. How about that, liberals?
I guess for news, as in what is going on in the area, the KC star is fine. But it a joke of a paper for anything else. It is highly progressive and low in circulation. People here in the KC Metro read local news websites or the Pitch for information. If they need to know about Kansas then one can go read the Topeka Capitol Journal. Plus the Star has paywalls like most every paper in many cities. The CJ doesn’t, but if it did then one can find other sources.
Mandatory training for all criminals...
There is the money quote. It is a giant responsibility, one which many of us embrace gladly.
Nope. Remember, the only one of our rights that children do not receive training (at least some) for in school is firearms ownership.
Time to rectify that.
The Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network gave out copies of Massad Ayoob’s latest book with their yearly packets last year.
I love that guy.
Next is to remove the weighty legalities and liabilities for lawful gun users.
“I would do all I could to have Mas involved in my defense as an expert witness!”
Really? Then take one of his courses NOW. Alumni get his legal services free.
“Next is to remove the weighty legalities and liabilities for lawful gun users.”
Impossible. The weighty legalities and liabilities are related to the use of deadly force and threat of deadly force. There is no making that less weighty, nor should we want to. Anyone who packs heat should take the responsibility to educate themselves about when and how to use it. Drunken cowboys a hundred years ago blew legal carry for the rest of us and it took a long time for us to get it back.
Excellent tutorial; I highly recommend it. But nothing is better than a careful study and knowledge of your own State's laws on the carry and use of firearms.
Wish I could have afforded the time and money to attend Mas's "LFI" (Lethal Force Institute) course while I was stuck nearby in MA...
Will be same effect as when Mississippi finally went true Constitutional Open Carry. No training required by the State and no reports of a bunch of untrained idiots doing stupid things with guns....you can walk around down here with a gun on your hip and have folks notice it without going bananas and calling the cops on you....
