Decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has suffered a setback after a robot sent in to a damaged reactor to locate melted fuel stalled hours into its mission and had to be abandoned.
The plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), said the robot stopped moving on Friday during its first inspection of the containment vessel inside reactor No 1, one of the three reactors that suffered meltdown after the plant was struck by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
Tepco, which recently conceded that the technology for robots to retrieve the nuclear fuel had yet to be developed, said on Monday it would cut the cables to the stranded robot and postpone a similar inspection using a separate device.
Developed by Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy and the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning, the robot was supposed to be able to function for about 10 hours even when exposed to radiation at levels that would cause ordinary electronic devices to malfunction.
The “transformer” robot, which can alter its shape depending on its surroundings, was sent in to photograph the inside of the reactor containment vessel and record temperatures and radiation levels

Personally, I won’t eat any food whatsoever any more, on the odd chance it is contaminated.

The Japanese failed to pass out iodide tablets to their population, because they denied there was a meltdown for three months. Then for over three years they denied complete meltdown. Now we know the worse case scenario occurred in reactors 1 and 2 due to recent muon detectors. Complete 100 % meltdown of reactor 1. Near 100 % meltdown of reactor 2. And 3 obviously blew up into the air. They still do know where the melted fuel is. That robot was supposed to help them find it. My suggestion, look in the decade animal bodies washing up along the Pacific shores of Japan and North America. And look at the thyroids of their own people.

More expensive than building a new robot because you sent it unprotected into a nuclear reactor?

Well you could ask the Japanese people what is going on, but the government made it a crime to spread false rumors about Fukushima.

A disaster compounded by denial. Governments don’t like to admit fault or failure so people suffer. Tragic.

When a radioactive super volcano erupts in Fukushima we’ll have a good idea.

They built the reactors over an aquifer. So it is slowly being driven out to sea. At least reactor cores 1 and 2 are. Number three was partly blown vertical after melt out.
The problem was they needed to evacuate 100’s of thousands and it was physically impossible after the earthquake and Tsunami. They also contemplated evacuating Tokyo, but decided not too. Where do you put a million people anyway ? So they decided to lie. That is what governments are for.

Right you are. Those in power want to stay in power. And they want more of it. So they lie, deceive and misdirect to protect their empires and interests.
Our Founding Fathers knew about this and tried to warn us. They wanted to limit the powers of government for good reason. Alas, we ignored their wisdom.
