With the Social Security disability-insurance (SSDI) program heading toward insolvency before the end of next year, lawmakers are looking for reforms to help individuals with disabilities but the capacity to work to return to work. Why it is so hard to get them to do so? Olga Khazan explores the question in a new piece in The Atlantic. Even those awarded benefits for a temporary condition tend to stay on Social Security for the rest of their lives.
Its a tough but urgent question. The disability program has seen tremendous growth in both costs and the number of beneficiaries in recent decades. Since 1990, the share of the working-age population receiving disability benefits has more than doubled from about one in 40 individuals to about 1 in 20 today. Spending on SSDI has doubled in real terms since 2000.
Opponents of broader reforms argue that these increases are a natural outcome of demographic and other explained factors and that therefore they are nothing to worry about. Robust research at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, however, suggests that the exact opposite.
Researchers find that only some of the increase in SSDI spending was due to aging baby boomers requiring increasing assistance with disability needs, to a greater number of working women becoming insured under the program, and to the Social Security retirement age edging up slightly over the past decade.
About half of the programs expansion cannot be explained by these demographic factors or changes in the labor force. Moreover, the growth in beneficiaries has occurred at the same time that health outcomes have improved nationwide and jobs have become less physically demanding.
Instead, it appears that as SSDI benefits have become more accessible and more valuable, in terms of how much of a persons wages they replace,

There is a fat ass 40 YO Rastafarian that lives across from me that sits on his porch all day and smokes and swills Bud light and claims ADD. “It” collects and has NEVER worked, aka, paid into the system and “it” needs to be re-evaluated.Yearly and the test needs to change to keep the system one step ahead of leaches like him.
When highly unprovable inflictions such as ADD and ADHD are illuminated that is a start
Make it every 6 months they have to requalify.
Then make the penalty for fraud so steep, say min. of 10 years in prison, not just for the person making the false claim but the doctor and lawyer too.
Also hit them with RICO and make them pay back 3 times the amount that has been stolen from the taxpayers.
Sigh! Here we go again. It was on this web site that someone claimed that if I could post to a web site, I could work a job. My neurological disorder did not make me stupid, just unable to work a regular job, even volunteer work. The main problem I see with SSDI is that the ‘rules’ appear to be applied at random. It does help to be in an ‘impacted group’, from what I can tell. The standards for SSI are different. Not being able to speak English is not a disability, IMHO.
“they are awarding SSI to illegal and legal immigrants just because they cannot speak English (seriously).”
That’s the “Cloward And Piven Strategy”. The liberal lefts
way of destroying America. This is one reason that absolutely
no respect should be shown to liberals or anyone who voted
for the Obama. There need be no dialogue with them on any
terms and no compromise with them in any form. They need to
be crushingly defeated and exposed for the enemy that they
are.
Yanking all those jobs back from Chinkna might just be a good start.
Stopping regulators from strangling small businesses with red tape might help too.
It will always be easier to re-direct funds from the elderly who have worked all their lives and have reached the age where they honestly can’t hold down most jobs. That money was stolen at the outset of the Social Security program. While I am being told otherwise, I’m seeing my medical care and fixed income do less and less while lazy, young, able-bodied adults have all the things I worked for all my life given to them for nothing. Even worse, what is “free” for those deadbeats is being paid for by a dwindling number of hard-working young adults like my son-in-law. He works twelve hours a day and juggles health insurance, school necessities for two children, clothing, house payments, etc. while deadbeat pill-head drug addicts and their families don’t even have to give a thought to such things. It’s all free to them.
There is always more of what gets the goods, so I suppose we can see what sort of citizens the United States is going to consist of. Even our laws are increasingly skewed towards the rights of lawbreakers rather than the law-abiding.
It has been rocketing upward since Hussein has been office and still rising. You can Google and search the SSA website, but they are taking the tactic of dazzling you with BS and too much useless information to get just the one fact you want, frankly.
Usually, they try to hide what the raw facts of SSDI, SSI are with respect to the amount they actually pay out. Too many categories, too many breakdowns that lead you down the rabbit hole of diverted pages. It is hard to get to that ‘just one question’ you want answered. Bureacracy
It will never happen. The shyster lawyers who got them onto disability in the first place will all file suit and tie up the entire Federal court system for the next 23 years. Then after the media is done running their “poor sucker from South Succotash” stories about some unfortunate dweeb whose benefits got pulled and who is now eating dog food, the GOP will turn and hightail it into the tall grass.
One of my disabilities is my eyesight ain’t what it used to be. LOL
You could say that, but look at the jump between 2008 and 2009. Biggest one year jump since they started keeping the data.
Additionally, while I will always thank W for defending this country from terrorists, I will also always reject him for two specific things: 1) Creating the DHS and TSA, and 2) Completely ceding spending control in favor of pandering to Democrats and no-goods.
I know so many disability scammers. It’s disgusting.
Yes. Read it. I just wanted to emphasize exactly when that happened to everyone.
Give them a week’s rations and let them know that when those rations are gone, they’re on their own.
First find leadership whose policies dont turn America into a ghetto.
The disability lawyer thing is big business. They’re on TV every day encouraging more and more people to try to get benefits. I see local ones in Columbus, and the big national offenders like Binder and Binder (lead by my former hero Dick Summer.)
Sorry, that just called out for a snarky response. I didn’t mean to go on carping about it. I just did it for the halibut. I’m hoping we cam be chums.
