If it does work, it torpedoes their necessary political proposition that sexual orientation is inborn and unchangeable. If it turns out that the homosexual can be led to the straight life, they can no longer claim the right to be a "protected class" like race or sex or national origin.
That is why this is a key issue for homosexual politics.

Saying “they were born that way” is just a red herring designed to sway some members of the public. Frankly, the proponents could care less WHY someone has such desires, they think anything is permissible and just say ‘yes’.
Sex positive proponents may also say that “abstinence doesn’t work” but their truth belief is that it is an unhealthy suppression of sexual desire. They seek to see everyone sexually active at every age. They see orgasm as a birthright to be enjoyed across the entire life span. There is no understanding of “age appropriate activity”.
