I would invite your attention to the fact that we never used them again, even though tactical nukes could have saved the lives of untold numbers of American soldiers, and even though we could have used city-flatteners to blackmail the rest of the world.

You are taking it far too subjectively.
Starting wars and killing people is pretty rotten. Our human pastime, for all nations is tribal warfare.
My point is that every technology we humans have developed has been used to murder other humans.
It doesn't matter what flag you fly, but that is not very nice.
There is always a justification. Always a great reason to kill people. If there isn't the politicians will create one, then send your sons to die for it. (NOT theirs, by the way...)
