I am so sick of this. We need to cut off Food Stamps for over half the people who get them. They aren’t “poor” anymore. Obama opened up eligibility so far that lower-Middle Class and even Middle Class people with large families get them. Able-bodied men who are just lazy get them. Its the biggest advance of Socialism of the past 6 years. We need to get rid of Food Stamps at the federal level and let the states deal with it as they see fit. The whole program is an expensive mess that has no relationship to how poor recipients are.
merge all welfare into a monthly cash dole and fire 90% of the bureaucrats (without actually cutting benefits) and see how the leftist media whines. Most welfare cost is bureaucracy I hear.
We should get rid of food stamps and EBT altogether and start supplying food, not $. They can use their benefits to”shop” at a food bank or just get a weekly allotment of food delivered. No cash involved.
I tend to lean more toward making sure that only the truly needy get food stamps or any kind of welfare and that it has a sunset clause of say 5 years.
As far as what people buy with the food stamps I’m in favor of personal choices. Beer and cigarettes no but if you want to make a poor choice and blow all your money at the first of the month on steak and lobster and eat beans and rice the rest of the month that’s your business. You cannot micro manage everyone and in a free society you should not try.
You won’t ever get rid of food stamps. Big food processors and retailers are in love with this program, as it allows them to sell their product to people who have no money.
Likewise this Surf and Turf bill won’t ever see the light of day. The retailers do not want to be hassled with red-flagging all of those SKU’s.
