State Department rejects call for Iran deal to affirm Israel's 'right to exist' (Marie Harf)

A State Department official dismissed a plea Friday from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the Iran nuclear agreement include clear recognition of his nation's "right to exist," declaring negotiations are "only about the nuclear issue."

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, in a terse response to a question about Netanyahu's concerns, told reporters, "This is an agreement that is only about the nuclear issue" -- a comment that indicates the Obama administration is not looking to enshrine Israel's security into a final agreement.

Harf, for her part, suggested the talks are complicated enough already.

"This is an agreement that doesn't deal with any other issues, nor should it," she said.

The Israeli prime minister, though, made the call for the "right to exist" measure during brief remarks early Friday. He blasted the Iran framework deal and said his Cabinet is uniformly opposed to it. He closed his brief address by demanding that any final agreement include "a clear and unambiguous Iranian recognition of Israel's right to exist."

The statement was prompted by reported statements from a top Iranian military official, who was quoted saying "erasing Israel" off the map is "non-negotiable."

To that, Netanyahu said: "The survival of Israel is non-negotiable."

Back in 2002, Bibi came to Congress to urge US to invade Iraq. Too bad we took his advice.

You are parroting the John Kerry line on Bibi from February and of Democrats over the past several years. Kerry said regarding Bibi's advice on Iraq, "We all know how that turned out." Operation Iraqi Freedom was not conducted by Bibi, who cannot be held responsible for its outcome. Watch Bibi's testimony before Congress as a private citizen in September of 2002. You will see that he discusses ways to de-stabilize both Iran and Iraq. Bibi's advice is as valid today as it was then.

Iraq was not lost under Bush, as you contend. Certainly there was a Shiite-lead government, but that merely reflected demographics. Under Saddam the Shiite majority was denied participation in government. Of course the new Iraq government was therefore sympathetic to Shiite Iran, but that was part of being a democracy. Iraq only began to fall apart when Obama failed to renew the Status of Forces Agreement.

No, I’m stating a fact. Bibi testified before Congress, urging the US to invade Iraq. That’s a fact, Jack. If Kerry said it, that doesn’t make the fact go away.

And Saddam was Iran’s biggest enemy in the world. That’s also a fact, Jack.

No more dialogue with you. As Lincoln said, you can’t have a conversation with a guy who insists that a Horse is a Dog. I can only converse with people who don’t try to deny facts.

Just what I expected from Obama and his minions.

Apparently, its too much work to ask Iran to behave like a normal country.

We’re going to remove sanctions on them, so the least we could ask of them is to acknowledge Israel is a legitimate state.

So much for reassuring Israel that its concerns are being taken into account.

After all, once you’ve dropped your principles to get a deal at any price, what’s one more? Marie Harf should know.

“..Bibi isn’t infallible, I guess...”

No, he is not infallible. But things have certainly changed in the region...because Saddam is history. This is going to be an interesting couple of years coming up....if it goes that long.

When did Bibi claim infallibility? The only man making such a claim is the Pope (and Catholicism). Bibi is a man of courage, integrity and honor in a world of “leaders” sadly lacking both, who has every reason to defend Israel from the howling wolves. Infallibility isn’t even an issue here. He’s not a god nor claiming to be. But he’s a better man than you’ll find in Washington D.C. right now. He puts them all to shame.

“..But he’s a better man than you’ll find in Washington D.C. right now. He puts them all to shame.”

Yes he does. And that is why I think we will see REAL leadership from him. In spite of Obama and the other clowns dealing with Iran.

You have to remember that this air-head bimbo could not get a real job out there...so our charitable federal government hires these unemployables by the thousands and puts them in positions of responsibility to prove how inept our government is...what a great program...of proving that waste matters!

I am really not surprised that President Obama has decided to throw our closest ally under the bus.

His petulant attitude toward Prime Minister Netanyahu is legendary.

And it certainly appears that he considers Iran (potentially, at least) more of a friend than Israel is...

She’s little more than a messenger of the other One messenger.

I can only hope loyal, rational citizens within govt are doing their best to mitigate this betrayal.

If anyone here has ever read Tom Clancy and his ‘The Bear and the Dragon’, (I think that’s the title), you will see that he think of the State Department as being staffed by a bunch of ‘diplomatic technicians’. These people think of diplomacy as a ‘big picture’ and are so far removed from the reality of what they are doing and who they are negotiating for.

They also don’t think of consequences very much as they have this HUGE checkbook covered by the taxpayers of the U.S. That means they can buy whatever result they want.

Well guess what guys... we’re BROKE! Your normal way of thinking is broke too.
