Missouri Republicans are trying to ban food stamp recipients from buying steak and seafood
Washington Post ^ | 04/03/2015 | By Roberto A. Ferdman

In 2013, Fox News proudly broadcast an interview with a young food stamp recipient who claimed to be using the government benefit to purchase lobster and sushi.

"This is the way I want to live and I don’t really see anything changing," Greenslate explained to Fox. “It’s free food; it’s awesome."

That story fit a longtime conservative suspicion that poor people use food stamps to purchase luxury items. Now, a Republican state lawmaker in Missouri is pushing for legislation that would stop people like Greenslate and severely limit what food stamp recipients can buy. The bill being proposed would ban the purchase with food stamps of "cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood or steak."

"The intention of the bill is to get the food stamp program back to it's original intent, which is nutrition assistance," said Rick Brattin, the representative who is sponsoring the proposed legislation.

Curbing food stamp purchases of cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks at least falls in line with the food stamp program's mission to provide nutrition. Nutrition experts are already discussing whether to remove unhealthy items from the list of foods participants can buy.

But seafood and steak? Seafood has been shown, time and again, to be a healthy part of any diet. And steak is such a broad category that it's essentially banning people from buying any flat cuts of beef, from porterhouse to flank.

"It just seems really repressive," said Mark Rank, a professor at...

well I disagree with all of that ... but it just illustrates that some on the right are no different than those on the left when it comes to things like this except possibly what they wish to control. You want to micromanage food and leftists want to ban sodas in schools because they are sending them tax dollars.

Oh, like our beloved leader and his wookie wife? They have their hands in your pocketbook - more than any person on food stamps ever will. I pay property taxes, some of which goes to our schools - and I have no say how that money is spent - such as supporting teacher’s unions and the Democrats they vote for - or the lifestyles those who receive the benefits of my tax money. See the illogic of your viewpoint?

You are illogical and know nothing about me. However, you seem fit to call me names - so, yes, you are judging.

If you don’t like others “judging” you then you ought to stop judging others. You whine about “name calling” yet you began with calling others “tyrant” and “just like Michelle Obama.” Why don’t you model the behavior you expect in others?

Hypocritical behavior is so... liberal!

It would only be illogical and/or hypocritical if I approved of the Obama’s and others living high on the hog on my dime.

Who pays the piper calls the tune. If you don’t like the music hire your own musician.

The leftists want to make us pay the band while they control the playlist. Those who can’t see this are intellectually blind.

I understand that many “game” the system and that welfare can be generational. I’ve seen it too, but, I don’t think we should throw out the baby with the bath water. There are truly many who need help. I’ve worked at a local food pantry - well, it is a local place where 3 meals a day are served - and they allow anyone to eat there - it’s a Christan organization. I’ve seen the truly needy, and I’ve seen those who squander too - Jesus sat down the 5,000 and fed them all - he didn’t discriminate between those who were qualified and those who weren’t. He fed them all.

LBJ was a genius.

In the interest of complete accuracy, LBJ was an incredibly corrupt genius.

You should know. And, yes it is tyrannical to try and tell others how to eat and what to eat. That isn’t being judgmental - it’s the truth.

You said you are retired. Do you attend local government meetings? Are you involved in local politics?

I associate with a group of local men who meet once a month and agree to attend three local meetings a month. We all have day jobs that at times require travel and overtime.

I remember that surplus cheese and peanut butter. We were just this side of not being eligible but when all the eligible folks got theirs then they’d hand out the leftovers to anyone. Our school used all that government surplus and it was wonderful. Peanut butter on lunch trays everyday. Homemade yeast rolls with real butter!

We couldn’t afford regular milk so it was powdered milk. Gawd awful nasty stuff. I still won’t have it in the house unless it’s a small box used just for homemade yogurt. In high school, a neighbor gave us milk fresh from her milk cow. Ahhhh, the skies opened and the angels sang! OMG, there is nothing better than real cow milk. OK, sneaking the cream off the top was up there, too. I’d take a pint jar and shake it to make butter while watching tv at night. Sure, those were little things but it was little things that helped stretch the budget. People these days don’t understand that or can’t be bothered.

Not necessarily - I don’t approve and there is not a darned thing any of us can do about it. However, the lifestyle they live is far above the lifestyle of those who receive food stamps. So, let’s hear some bitching about telling the obamas how to live and what to eat - because after all - our tax dollars are supporting their waste.

You are intellectually blind because you have no way of knowing what all your tax money is used for - and no say so in how it is distributed either.

Well, bitch away, but make sure your bitch is equally distributed - and not just directed toward those who receive food stamps.

I remember that awful powdered milk as well, and coming from a poor background - we didn’t have food stamps nor get government cheese or anything. Nor did we eat very well, and that’s why I don’t complain about people who need help receiving food stamps. Some forget from whence they came.

It sounds like you never had children. Tyrannical parents tell their kids how and what to eat all the time.

I’ve eaten in many military chow halls. Those tyrants fed me well.

Yes, you should! It only works if you’re involved and you get in their faces and remind them that THEY work for YOU.

He also made a whip and beat the tar out of those who committed fraud and usury at the entrance of the temple. Plus He chastised the Pharisees and the Scribes for their hypocrisy. God hates hypocrisy.
