Missouri Republicans are trying to ban food stamp recipients from buying steak and seafood
Washington Post ^ | 04/03/2015 | By Roberto A. Ferdman

In 2013, Fox News proudly broadcast an interview with a young food stamp recipient who claimed to be using the government benefit to purchase lobster and sushi.

"This is the way I want to live and I don’t really see anything changing," Greenslate explained to Fox. “It’s free food; it’s awesome."

That story fit a longtime conservative suspicion that poor people use food stamps to purchase luxury items. Now, a Republican state lawmaker in Missouri is pushing for legislation that would stop people like Greenslate and severely limit what food stamp recipients can buy. The bill being proposed would ban the purchase with food stamps of "cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood or steak."

"The intention of the bill is to get the food stamp program back to it's original intent, which is nutrition assistance," said Rick Brattin, the representative who is sponsoring the proposed legislation.

Curbing food stamp purchases of cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks at least falls in line with the food stamp program's mission to provide nutrition. Nutrition experts are already discussing whether to remove unhealthy items from the list of foods participants can buy.

But seafood and steak? Seafood has been shown, time and again, to be a healthy part of any diet. And steak is such a broad category that it's essentially banning people from buying any flat cuts of beef, from porterhouse to flank.

"It just seems really repressive," said Mark Rank, a professor at...

How easy for you to sit in your comfort zone and pass judgment on others. While, I admit, there are a lot of lazy loafers out there - there are many who truly need the help - and some are caught in circumstances beyond their control. Many would like jobs, but, in this Obama economy - that isn’t necessarily an attainable goal. We didn’t have these problems with a Republican in the presidency - for the most part - the economies under their administrations were good - as it was under Clintons. People out there are hurting - so why don’t you get off your judgmental platform and take a good, hard look at those who are really in need. There isn’t a thing you or I can do about the waste and fraud. Heck, we can’t do anything about the corrupt politicians who get away with waste and fraud either. Jesus said - I was hungry and you fed me not - read the Bible -

but, seem to content to pass judgment. Judge not lest ye be judged

You have a lot of audacity whining about judging after calling many here “Tyrant” and “Just like Michelle Obama” because they reject your collectivist ramblings.

You’re the cowardly punk who tries to bully others only to cry when he gets his butt handed to him. You really are a “progressive!”

Keep your grubby booger hooks out of my pocket, sheep!

Why do some on here always assume that because a person receives food stamps that they are boozers or druggies?

If that rule were generally allowed to happen,
we’d have a lot fewer not working.

Then we could determine who was truly needy
and who is just too lazy to lift his hand from his bowl to his mouth.
_____________

True enough!

I believe it is the individual within the local community who should decide who the truly needy are.

It is the federal government deciding for me and my community that is wrong; especially since the government is buying low info votes with our money.

Why do some on here always assume that because a person receives food stamps that they are boozers or druggies? I know several people who get them and do NOT fit into this category. I think some of you on here would fit in nicely with the tyranny crowd.

Well you can "feel" any way you like. I pay their bills. So the can hear my complaints.

The problem with this whole Plastic Welfare funding is it gives the user the mindset that they are just like everyone else using C.C. to buy stuff. Problem is My plastic deducts out of MY bank account. Theirs deducts out of MY paycheck.

As far as I am concerned they should do away completely with the Welfare credit cards. They could save 3/4 of the money wasted on junk food and premium meats etc by handing out powdered milk, blocks of cheese, Peanut Butter and canned meat.

They are Living off others, their Opinion means NOTHING to me. Anyone should have a bit of shame accepting welfare. The Problem is in the minds of most on the system it is a right and they will damned well spend it on what they want.

So take it away...You want to eat for free, you get what WE provide.

It is Insulting to listen to anyone on the system complain about what they get when I have to stand in line at a checkout and watch fat, tattooed people with the latest greatest smart phone repeatedly try to pay for Brisk drinks and Klondike bars on their Bridge card. When it won't accept it because there isn't enough left on their months allotment they use the card for the drinks and pay cash for the candy, then ask for 3 packs of Cigarettes at $6 a pack and pay with cash.

Then the working stiff in the line behind them has to budget their money and live off ramen noodles and hotdogs.

Anyway you slice it when 50+ million apply for handouts the majority are scammers. I won't begrudge anyone that needs it and uses it as intended by the majority are freeloading parasites too lazy to get off their asses and work to support themselves. LBJ and many Politicians saw clear to make a whole lot of lazy people dependent and the sheeple lined up for free stuff. Rant off

LBJ was a genius. Locked in Democrat votes forever. And by putting it under the Ag Dept instead of HEW, he made food stamps politically bulletproof.

Na..cats just needs to grow up.

It does not sound like cats has a job - at least not one that does not receive “earned income tax returns” each year. If she did, her tune would change.

Judge not lest ye be judged - liberals’ favorite [partial] bible verse.

Let me finish it for you, cats - “by the same measure”.

OK, here’s me being judged by the same measure:

if I’m buying food with money confiscated from another person, I better not be buying types of food that other person now can’t afford.

Understandably, libs don’t like the idea of accountable charity.

Charities that truly help needy people will get donations.
But, since those donations are dependent on the reputation of the charity, they are going to make sure that the people most in need are getting the resources, and not some deadbeat.

If a charity becomes known for being wasteful,
giving out to people driving better cars
than those dropping off stuff, for instance,

then the charity will get less donations.

It’s that “invisible hand” that the left despises so much.

...Says the hypocrite who consistently “judged” others who disagreed with her socialist rantings. You labeled anyone who disagreed with your collectivist philosophies “Tyrant” and “Michelle Obama.” I suppose like any other “good liberal” it’s different when you do it.

I mentioned my giving only because you accused us of not caring for the poor. I accuse you of shirking your Christian duties by abdicating charity to your great and almighty government.

The Bible is more than a tool to “guilt” others into falling in with “progressive” indoctrination.

Jesus said we would always have the poor. What would He say to you about making them comfortable in their poverty and for your chastisement of those who seek to push them into self reliance?

You point out the exception to the rule. Here’s my experience - the foodstamp/AFDC secretary shared an office with my secretary. She’d worked there for years and was becoming more and more upset over the same families, their children and their children’s children cycling through generation after generation forever. They’d come in smelling of booze and smoking and bragging about their latest bling to each other but complaining to her their children were starving. One day she’d had enough and quit. Why? Because the “clients” were raking in more money for sitting on their duffs than she did working 40 plus hours a week.

Maybe Cats is upset about the push to block the use of EBT cards at ATMs in strip clubs.
