A strikingly high percentage of refugees to the United States use some form of public assistance, according to a government report to Congress.
The Office of Refugee Resettlements Annual Report to Congress for FY2013 reveals that nearly 3 in 4 refugees were on food stamps.
Additionally, nearly half were on some form of cash assistance and more than a half were on medical assistance. More than 20 percent were on Supplemental Security Income, more than 22 percent were in public housing and nearly 20 percent were on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
The report noted that many households received more than one type of assistance and the data dealt with refugees who arrived in the U.S. between March 1, 2008 to February 28, 2013.
To be sure, assistance use varied among region of origin.
Refugees from Africa and the Middle East were the heaviest users of cash assistance at 61.9 percent and 68.3 percent respectively. Latin American refugees only used cash assistance at a rate of 8.1 percent and South Asia

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Isn’t it crazy how We the Tax Payers foot the bill for Public *Assistance* funding, yet we don’t get to see a breakdown of expenditures, or determine guidelines for how our hard earned money is redistributed?
Music to the ears of the members of the DC Uniparty.
Duh. If you hand out free stuff, they will come and become dependent on government handouts.. That’s why you can’t feed the bears at Yellowstone.
That’s because all the people on welfare plus the illegal immigrants, and tens of millions of people out of work wasn’t enough to destroy the most successful nation known to man.
Is there any civilized country these days where immigrants are expected to both be legal and work and they protect their culture and demography?
Learn from New Zealand and Australia. No one is allowed to immigrate unless you are very wealthy or have skills in demand. USA is fast becoming a 3rd world country by importing unskilled and poor migrants from all over.
Had to go to the store today. The lines were full of welfare LEACHES with food stamps and EBT cards...OUR MONEY!
“OUR MONEY”
gibsmedat, ya’ll didn’t earn it. and yo daughter look good too with that white privilage goin on
And my brother is dying of cancer, on s.s. disability and can’t get food stamps..but these people go to the front of the line. Outrageous.
They aren’t “refugees”. They are Xenofreeloaders.
Isn’t this stat to be expected and even rendered meaningless except as a measuring point for later progress? Doesn’t the very definition of the word refugee make it so?
i think the difference between what you say and i agree with and this article is the word refugee and the term illegal immigrant.
One is granted some status while the other has none or should have none. Now as to the abuse of the system of determining refugees, that’s a different story.
WHere I work the old white guys have no insurance ...but the mexicans....do......
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
We never should’ve put that poem on our Front Door; France TOTALLY played us. ;)
What defines a refugee?
Sure is, once upon a time you had to have a sponsor, be able to support yourself and family.
My invalid brother 57 was just turned down for TennCare. He has Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, and the doctor says he will never be able to work again. So no job, no income, and no health care. SS disability takes 3-4 yrs. He needs a care facility that will make sure he takes his meds, eats right, does hygiene, and gets to doctors appointments.
My poor sister who has scoliosis and her husband who has MD has to put up with him as her house was his last address, he lived in a RV in her back yard which he wrecked the inside of. Hospital just brought him via ambulance with a walker and took 2 big men to haul him up steep stairs and dumped him on her loveseat in her living room. Which is now his bed. How are they supposed to pick up a 200 lb man if he falls? No way to install a wheelchair ramp on the house due to the fact it is on the side of a Mountain in E. TN.
They are looking for a flat yard house so they can build a ramp for my BIL as his MD has advanced to the point he will not be able to work more than another 2 yrs and is now dragging himself up the narrow basement stairs.
So is “refugee” the new name for illegals?
This is actually quite interesting with the lowest usage numbers being in the Latino group. Thanks for the pings.
