Mumia Abu-Jamal Hospitalized In “Diabetic Shock”
News One ^ | 3/31/15

Imprisoned journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal is in intensive care for treatment of diabetes and is “not doing well,” his family said Tuesday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Abu-Jamal, 60, was taken from the Pennsylvania state Correctional Institution in Mahanoy to Schuylkill Medical Center in Pottsville Monday after passing out, his wife Wadiya Jamal said outside the hospital. She says prison officials told her he is in diabetic shock.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer:

His blood sugar level was very high – 779 – when he arrived at the hospital and remains at more than 300, she said. (Anything above 186 is considered dangerously high.)

A hospital spokesman said he could not confirm that Abu-Jamal is a patient at the hospital or release information about his condition. Family members said they have not met with a doctor, but have pieced together information from conversations with nurses and Abu-Jamal.

The former death-row inmate is shackled to a chair and receiving an insulin drip treatment in intensive care, his family said.

Abu-Jamal’s family tells Philadelphia’s ABC 6 that prison officials have failed to provide proper medical treatment.

Abu-Jamal is a former Black Panther serving life in prison for the 1981 murder of white Philadelphia Officer Daniel Faulkner. His conviction was upheld through years of appeals, but he has gained international support for his claim that he’s the victim of a racist justice system.

We’ll keep you updated with the latest.

He prescribed one called Qsymia but my blue cross blue shield wouldn’t cover it, it was around $60 a week oop, and I’m just too frugal (or cheap) to pay that much. I’ll run Belviq by him at my next appointment. Thanks for the tip.

The President ... shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
Article II, Section 2, Clause 1.

Of course, with THIS President, who knows what extra-legal baloney he may try to pull in January 2017.

Dude, I routinely have a blood sugar of 450. Should I worry?

I would. I’d be scared poopless if that was me again, laz.

That morning I read 435 at 600 am was after eating no dinner the night before, because I felt sick. I puked my guts out all night long from 1000 pm to 600 am. I may have puked 2-3-400 times. I don’t even know.

I was an uncontrolled diabetic until that night. I knew I had it, but I denied it. The two main symptoms I had was constant, unquenchable thirst and extremely frequent urination. My body was doing its best to flush that sugar, but was not able to, and that resulted in extreme hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis for me.

My sugar was placed in control with metformin and glimeperide since then. They are cheap drugs and they work. I’m pretty sure I’d die a horrible death without them.

Naw. I’ll be fine. I’ve had 450-550 blood sugar for the last 2 to 3 years. Never had a problem.

I figure my unquenchable thirst helps me get more water in my system. It’s not a bug, it’s a FEATURE!

Yep, mine was like that too, then it went to over 600
Now I’m on metformin and glypicide and it’s around 110
I was having blurry vision, constant thirst and urination.
Got where I was drinking lots of fruit juice but it had
too much sugar and was driving it worse.
Now I watch my sugar and starches and do ok.

Take care.

Laz, Laz Laz, there’s nothing good about the number 450 unless you’re counting your paramours.

I didn’t take it seriously for a long time but then
I met a guy whose idea of diet control was to drink
a beer.

He went into a coma, they had to remove both his
legs and he never left the hospital after that.

My only problem now is if it gets too low, then
I get shakes and other symptoms, but I carry
glucose tabs with me and eat more frequently.

Good luck, a world of women without Laz
would be a pitiful place...and now I’m too
old to take advantage of it.

No, no no, laz, get yourself to the doctor asap if your sugar is at that level!!!

letting it stay that high for any length of time can result in serious consequences such as kidney failure, needing dialysis for the rest of your life, diabetic coma, shock, death.

having a sugar 150-250 or so is considered more dangerous, because there are no symptoms and it just kind of does its dirty work in a stealthy manner, but at 400+ you have symptoms with the thirst and urination, and that sugar is wreaking havoc all day, every day. Doctor! Go! Please!

Off topic a bit, but DKA is often the PRESENTING sign in a diabetic.

Many people are going around with high blood sugars and had no idea they were diabetic, until they show up in the ER with DKA.

No idea if that was the case here with Mumia.

But it would make sense.

Any two-bit prison doctor would have had him on insulin long before this, if Mumia was a known type I DM.
