House Dem calls for tax on sugary drinks

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) has introduced legislation to tax caloric sweeteners in beverages as a means of reducing obesity and other health conditions among Americans.

DeLauro's bill would impose a tax of one cent per teaspoon of sweeteners like sugars and high fructose corn syrup.

Beverages made from 100 percent fruit juice, nutritional therapies and infant formula would be exempted from the tax. Milk, including rice and soy, would also not qualify.

The revenue would go toward federal research on diabetes, obesity, tooth decay and other dietary health conditions.

DeLauro, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee overseeing the Department of Health and Human Services, argued her proposal would discourage high sugar counts in beverages while funding research to help prevent health conditions caused by poor diets.

"There is a clear relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and a host of health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and tooth decay. We are at a crucial tipping point," DeLauro said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that about 78.6 million, or more than 30 percent, of American adults are obese, and about 17 percent of children ages two to 19 years suffer from obesity.

Many studies have found correlations between diets high in sugar and increased health risks. A 2014 study found that excess sugar intake significantly increased the risk of heart disease, even among people who are not obese. The study's authors noted that sweetened beverages constituted about 37 percent of the added sugar in Americans' diets.

DeLauro previously introduced the measure in the last Congress, but it did not receive legislative action.

Pay to subsidize sugar, pay to give EBT cards to buy it with, then tax it... LOL!

Dems are the living embodiment of the joke about the tailor who sold clothes at a loss but made it up in volume...

That look on the lady on right in the background sums it up.

I stopped drinking sugar-sweetened drinks 13 years ago and I’m still overweight. Maybe there’s more to it than that.

But, why tax it? If its that bad, just ban it! Come on Progressives. You can do it.

Noting that I no longer drink sugary drinks myself, please consider the following.

Regardless that Rep. Rosa DeLauro has sworn to protect and defend the Constitution which the RINO-controlled House has read out loud at the beginnings of the last several legislative sessions, low-information Rep DeLauro evidently doesn’t understand, or is wrongly ignoring, the following about the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers.

The states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the Constitution, the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for intrastate commerce purposes. This is evidenced by the following Supreme Court case excerpt.

”State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress [emphases added].” —Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

But because of the ill-conceived 17th Amendment, state lawmakers foolishly giving up their voices in Congress by ratifying that amendment, the corrupt Senate could still pass such a House bill.

The 17th Amendment needs to disappear. And the repeal amendment needs a provision giving a 2/3 state legislature majority the power to remove bad-apple justices from the Supreme Court since the Senate cannot be trusted to work with the House to remove activist justices.

True, but it will take them 1000-2000 years to catch on that their party leaders don’t really like them

I’d like to propose a proportional tax imposed on democrats, as a means of lessening the destruction of the people and economy of the Unites States of America, and to help demonstrate just how ridiculous 95% of their BS is.
