Rep. Tammy Duckworth D-Ill., made it official on Monday and announced her 2016 Senate in a video, largely autobiographical, titled Tammy Duckworth is running for the Senate.
As first reported in the Chicago Sun-Times, Duckworth, a wounded Iraq war vet, elected to her second term last November, is looking in 2016 to clinch the Democratic nomination and take on Sen. Mark Kirk R-Ill.
Kirk is a top target for the Senate Democrats as he seeks a second term. Duckworth does not mention his name in her announcement video.
Duckworth describers herself as a wife, a mom and a combat veteran she is nursing her baby daughter, Abigail in the video. She talks about her Blackhawk helicopter being shot down near Baghdad, taking her legs and damaging an arm.
In the wake of surviving combat, Duckworth said in the video, I view my time now as a bonus, and that has allowed me to speak up without fear.
I am running for the United States Senate in 2016 because it is time for Washington to be held accountable and to put Illinois families and communities first.
If you elect me as Illinois Senator, I will fight my heart out to represent you with honor and integrity, Duckworth says in the video.

“Rep. Tammy Duckworth announces Senate bid: “I will fight my heart out to represent you with honor and integrity””
You know she’s lying, because she’s a Democrat, and they haven’t a clue what integrity is.
“honor and integrity”
...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Perhaps she meant “honor and distinction” of the Bergdahl sort.
Not an expert on IL politics. The state is solidly blue giving the Dems some built-in advantages and Duckwarth also receives a certain sympathy from her war injuries. The good news is the state may be tiring of one-party Dem rule as it elected a GOP businessman as governor last year. Kirk is no conservative, however, Duckwarth if elected, would be a reliable vote for Dem majority in the US Senate.
Political hyperbole. Her aircraft wasn’t shot down. The PC landed it safely after the RPG exploded in her chin bubble to have her and other wounded crew members evacuated. She was a staff officer, along for the ride to get her flight time in when she caught the magic BB. Duckworth wangled her way into a senior position at the VA under Shinseki. The same VA that is STILL fundamentally broken. Now, she’s a representaive and wants to be a senator from IL.
Yes, a veteran who supports DEMOCRATS. And, if you check her voting record, I believe you will find she is not a big supporter of any veterans’ issues.
I’ve seen her on committees questioning military people and she is very rude to them.
Actually, the Founding Fathers viewed the job of a Senator as that of keeping the Federal government from becoming too involved in people's lives.
'Course they viewed the job of a Representative the same way.
What’s a duck worth?
Is a lying, democrat duckworth worth less?
She’s a formidable opponent. In a presidential year, hard to beat unfortunately. I know of a couple good gop’ers in Washington who have some level of respect for Duckworth as well. ‘A democrat they can like’.
Will my jerrymander congresscritter run for both the house and senate simultaneously?
At what point will she resign to campaign for a different office? If ever? If she were to be a senator and a representative; would she receive both salaries?
As a fellow DAV I respect her.
That does not mean I vote for her.
“I will fight my heart out to represent you with honor and integrity, Duckworth says”
What BS! When has she spoken out against all that honor and integrity emanating from the Oval Office? Salute her service to the country but she is certainly traveling down the wrong road.
“Look at me, GEORGE BUSH stole my legs!!!! Won’t you vote for me? “
That’s Bammy Suckworthless in a nutshell.
Hillary or whoever won’t do as well as Obama did in Illinois. So the number of of crossover votes that RINO Kirk needs to win is very manageable compared to say Scott Brown in 2012, who couldn’t overcome a 23 point Obama win in MA.
Fortunately, we might be able to get a Republican in NV with the Reid retirement so we can hold the Senate numbers steady.
No, Rep. Duckworth can’t run for the U.S. Senate & House, at the same time. That’s legal in some states, but that’s not legal in Illinois.
Which Republican will run for Duckworth’s current seat? I heard that Congressman Bill Foster will run for the U.S. Senate. Who will run for his seat, the 11th District?
Kirk won because it was a non-presidential ballot year. He’ll lose because this time it is.
In 2004, Sen. Kerry won 57%, in IL. In 2016, the democrat presidential nominee will win at least that percentage, in IL, but the U.S. Senate race will be closer. In that race, the Democrat will win about 50%.
She can't.
