Well, sort of. Nobody is compelling me to pay for the phone calls. Unlike Obozonocare, where I am fined by the Federal Government (or is that taxed?) for not purchasing a product.

Sure, no one is compelling you to pay for the phone calls. But, if you do chose to make said phone calls, there is only one phone provider (for any given prison), and that provider received an exclusive contract for the prison based not on the price/quality of the service it offers to the inmates and their families, but rather based on the level of kickbacks (err, “concession fees”) it provides to the prison. That’s about as far from “free enterprise” as you can get.
