‘Just me and Allah': Photographer seeks to capture diversity of Islam

As a child, photographer and editor Samra Habib lived within what she describes as the strict “culture of surveillance” of mainstream Islam.

But as she grew into her 20s, Habib began to question her sexuality — as well as her own understanding of what it meant to be Muslim.

“There’s a wide range of diversity that exists within Islam,” she said. “The conversations I would have with other queer Muslims, I realized this was a voice that wasn’t being heard.”

Inspired by her peers, many of whom attend Unity Mosque, a “human positive” mosque in Toronto, Canada, Habib decided to begin taking portraits of Muslim people who also identify as part of the LGBTQ community.

It’s all fun and games until they start throwing people off of roofs.

Let’s be honest. Islam is a gutter religion. The religion of the ignorant, savages, miscreants. Nothing anticipated by our founding fathers. If there is a Constitutional Amendment that needs passage it is to amend the 1st Amendment to not apply to death cults claiming to be religions.

Actually, I don’t think of it as “gutter.” I think it is a disease - an insanity of a sort that infects millions. Plague comes to mind.

Gotta love people who take snapshots and call it “art”.

Where is the skill?

We must be vigilant. As awful as islam is, it is attracting young white European ancestry people. Look at the dummies joining ISIS. Why?because they are looking for normalcy. Normal heterosexuality and a belief in a creator that modern euro-types now scoff at.

I suspect it will have to come down to a massive war and the destruction of all of islam in order for civilized people to survive.

One could says that the techniques of Ansel Adams was art. His B&W pictures of western landmarks are beautiful. And it was not just taking pictures....he forced lighting conditions to occur on photographic emulsion that would not occur by just snapping pictures.

But I agree the so called ‘artist’ of this article is basically just snapping pictures of faggots

I worked as a photographer for a magazine that was doing a story on Islamic athletes. Shooting the women who played sports was interesting. All of the restrictions about not being alone, and no touching, and the head wear were in place.

I never realized how much I moved around the women I would photograph and how much I would actually touch them.

I should have charged more for having to explain every little thing instead of just touching a shoulder and moving it a little bit.

I am glad that project ended.

I do have to say that they were all nice women and most of them had some funny stories about their sports lives.

“Queer Muslims?”

I thought they were tossed off the tops of roofs. ISIL now has really professional mug shots for the files.

Gay Muslims...before they get thrown off roofs...(they only want gay boys under 10).

A 'human positive' mosque? Isn't that an oxymoron?
