Walkers position, the one he was attacked for was misrepresented by the lamestream press (surprise surprise). He did not call for a pathway to citizenship as was reported.
His position is very much like that of Ted Cruz, who suggests some sort of legal status that cannot by law ever be a stepping stone to citizenship, and that only for non-law-breakers. I would assume that would include the so-called dreamers, but few others.
This whole issue is so toxic that I think there is no coherent position that will not draw fire from some quarter.
The only thing that makes sense to me to first and foremost to get complete control of the border - all of it. Then to start sorting out whos who, and most of them need to be repatriated to wherever they came from. Either voluntarily or forcefully makes no difference to me, but it has to happen.

Cruz never supported any form of legalization of illegals, though Walker supported naturalization, citizenship, in a television interview.
The author of this article, Allan Favish, wants clarity from Cruz as to what, if any, status Cruz proposes to give illegals, short of citizenship. Cruz's answer is that he won't speculate on that until the border, and "interior enforcement systems" are secured. Any speculation on that, in his spokeswoman's view, "could encourage more illegal immigration".
To my mind, that's "self deport" without saying so. We just need to trust Cruz; but for starters he is already ahead of all the competition. This is very smart politics.
If you read about the toxic interaction of LEGAL IMMIGRATION + REFUGEE INDUSTRY + NON-PROFITS you will see it’s more than the border that needs protecting. The 8USC 1324 statute on Shielding, Harboring, Aidding was undermined under Clinton. 1611 was added but gave the US Attorney General power offer a huge loophole providing non-profits, NGO’s defense from prosecution. Here is what I have written on a blogpost:
Although President Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act in 1996 -8 USC 1642, (which required proof of citizenship in order to receive many benefits and made church charities and non-profit organizations verify eligibility of citizenship), it also came with another caveat. The Attorney General was given exclusive powers to create community programs, services and assistance necessary for the “protection of life or safety” which could be provided by government-funded agencies without regard to legal status,(8 U.S.C. 1611).
We are now tracing this enthusiasm for “refugees, asylum” in our state of Texas and the money to be made. Obviously the Central American “youth” invasion made this loophole very profitable.
When I hear Cruz talk about LEGAL IMMIGRATION I am hoping he knows about this...
The difference is that Scott Walker supports citizenship and Cruz opposes it.
So who is Cincinatus’ Wife trying to bring down? Ted Cruz.
