Sounds like they couldn’t have known; if he had a problem with depression back in 2008-2009, but then the doctors said he was good to go, this more recent medical/mental situation was something he hid from the airline....

Might depend if it was his personal doctor or company doctor.
I don’t know which is the case. Nonetheless, you’d think they would not write a note, but physically call the company even if it were a private doctor. The doctor had to know this guy was a commercial pilot.
Someone is going to really regret helping this guy hide his psych issues, if this story is accurate.
I guess background checks on his mental state through the years still allowed him to fly a passenger jet liner. The relatives of the murdered should crush this company financially

Now if the patient was ranting to the doctor that he was going to crash a plane into a mountain or felt like killing someone, then there’s an exception for that.

REQUIRE MEDICAL FITNESS FOR DUTY
Medical conditions and treatments that impair transportation professionals’ performance directly affect safety. To mitigate the risk to the public, the NTSB has made recommendations for a comprehensive medical certification system for safety-critical transportation personnel, including these features:-a complete medical history of the applicant, taken at prescribed intervals, that includes medications, conditions, and treatments as well as a physical examination
-specific historical questions and physical examination procedures to identify applicants at high risk for sleep disorders
-identification of specific conditions, treatments, and medications that initially disqualify applicants for duty, with certification contingent on further testing (specific to each condition)
-explicit and uniform processes and criteria for determining when the applicant has a treated but otherwise disqualifying condition
-certificates that are good only for a limited time for applicants with conditions that are currently stable but known to be likely to deteriorate, to ensure appropriate retesting
-medical examiners who
=are licensed or registered to both perform examinations and prescribe medication in a given state;
=are specifically trained and certified to perform medical certification exams; and
=have ready access to information regarding disqualifying conditions and required further evaluation-a review system for medical examiners’ work product(s) with both the information and capacity to identify and correct errors and substandard performance
-the capacity to prevent applicants who have been deferred or denied certification from finding another provider who will certify them -a process for dealing with conditions which could impair safety and are diagnosed between certification exams.
Agreed.... Unfortunately, even for a high profile case such as this with so much that was on and is on the line, we'll likely never know any details i.e. what the note was exactly for, what the thinking was of the doctor, what exactly was the purpose of the note etc. You would think that it wouldn't be possible for the doctor to not be informed as to his profession but maybe that was actually hidden from him. Regardless, I can't wrap my mind around the concept of the fate of this aircraft depending on whether or not a sick pilot acted upon a hand scribbled note from his doctor.
They are already offering family members 50,000 euro each.
