THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

”Adelaide”, Op. 46

Although it possesses an opus number that would correlate with a middle period piece, this song actually dates from 1796. Frederick von Matthison’s poem has been set by a goodly number of composers, to include the 17 year old Franz Schubert, but it is Beethoven’s through-composed setting that has stood the test of time and become a favorite for tenors. Near the end, note how Beethoven plays with the phrase “auf jedem Purpurblättchen” (“on each little purple page”) like a young god creating a new world. This is one where you just need to close your eyes and roll with it.

It was along about 1988 or so, and the factory I was working in was closing.
A couple of us guys called the local radio station with a request.
They played ‘Take This Job And Shove It’ dedicated to us,
and we piped it through the plant’s PA system.
