Surprise: High school students return after weekend to find male teacher now living as a woman

CHINO, CA, March 27, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- Southern California’s Chino High School is facing outrage from parents and students alike after school administrators decided to keep secret a teacher’s plan to undergo a sex change in the middle of the school year.

The teacher in question, 32-year-old Michael Swager, showed up at work dressed and made up as a woman the morning of March 16, after eight years of teaching chemistry at the school as a man.  The teacher informed students that the 6’6”, 300 lb. man they once knew as “Michael” was now a woman, and told them they should call him “Amanda.”

School administrators had known for two years that Swager was planning to make the transition from male to female, but chose not to warn students or parents ahead of time.

“Chino High School is aware of the teacher’s decision,” the school said in a statement.  “It is a personal and private matter for the teacher.”

Swager’s case is complicated in that the teacher was raised as a boy after being born with ambiguous genitalia, as well as a condition called Kallmann Syndrome, which blocks sufferers from going through puberty without chemical assistance.

Because genetic testing was not widely available in the early 1980s, Swager’s parents were forced to choose for themselves whether to raise their child as a boy or a girl.  In the end, they decided the baby was a boy, and named him Michael, giving him hormone injections in his early teens to simulate male puberty.

All the while, however, Swager felt as if “he” was really a “she.”  In high school and college, Swager avoided the hormone treatments and began dressing as a female.  Later genetic testing would reveal that Swager did indeed possess two X chromosomes, not the X and Y combination that makes someone genetically male.

“My parents chose the wrong sex,” Swager told the Chino Champion newspaper. “I look at myself in the mirror and I go, ‘I see a female body.’”

Upon learning the truth, Swager began taking female hormones to try and undo the effects of the male hormones she had been given as a young teen.  Outside of work, she lived as a female, dressing in feminine clothing and dating men.  But at work, she still presented herself as Michael – a man, albeit an androgynous one.

Swager said she originally planned to make her transition public after summer break in order to give her students and colleagues time to adjust.  But then her private life and work life began to collide.  After she changed her name to “Amanda Swager” on Facebook, a group of teens saw the page and confronted her about it at school.  Meanwhile, another group of students spotted her at the movies with her boyfriend during spring break and took video with their smartphones.  Swager decided it was time to come out, or risk being outed by the teens.  She notified school staff of her intention to take her situation public in a letter issued Thursday, March 12.  School officials kept mum, and Swager surprised the student body by showing up the following Monday wearing women’s clothing and calling herself Amanda.

The decision to keep Swager’s plans quiet upset both parents and students at the school, who said they would have liked more time to prepare for the change rather than leaving Michael Swager behind on Friday and coming back to Amanda Swager on Monday, without warning or explanation.

"In the end it's his choice. It's his life, but they should have at least said something about it so we could have known,” one student, Viviana Vasquez, told NBC-LA.

"On a Friday he was a man, on Monday he was woman," a parent told the network, speaking anonymously. One dad, Rusty, said he thought the abrupt transition would be disruptive to the learning process, as children struggle to understand what has happened to the popular teacher.  “They’re going to want to know why did the teacher did what he did.”

But Swager dismissed such concerns as intrusive.  “What’s there to notify you about?” Swager asked via CBS Los Angeles. “If I was pregnant and had a miscarriage, I wouldn’t notify you that I had a miscarriage. It’s a personal issue.”

I know the feeling.

_______________________________________________________________

I showed up at work dressed and made up as a puppy the morning of March 16, after eight years of teaching math at the school as a human. I informed students that the 6’0”, 180 lb. man they once knew as “Pollster” was now a puppy, and told them they should call me “Spot.”

School administrators had known for two years that I was planning to make the transition from human to puppy, but chose not to warn students or parents ahead of time.

“The High School is aware of the teacher’s decision,” the school said in a statement. “It is a personal and private matter for the teacher.”

My case is complicated in that I was raised as a human after being born with ambiguous floppy ears, as well as a condition called Kanine Syndrome, which blocks sufferers from going through parks without chasing balls.

Because genetic testing was not widely available in the early 1980s, my parents were forced to choose for themselves whether to raise their child as a human or a puppy. In the end, they decided the baby was a human, and named me Pollster, giving me hormone injections in my early teens to simulate human puberty.

All the while, however, I felt as if I was really a “good boy!” In high school and college, I avoided regular games and began playing fetch and chasing cars. Later breathalyzer testing would reveal that I did indeed possess doggie breath, not the more tolerable breath that makes someone acceptably human.

“My parents chose the wrong species,” I told the local newspaper. “I look at a fire hydrant near the park and I go, ‘I need to lift my leg.’”

Nope. Still a little warning would have been in order.

“After she changed her name to “Amanda Swager” on Facebook”...

Which was definitely not the thing to do if she wanted any sort of anonymity-I don’t get why anyone would put anything on Farcebook unless they wanted to advertise it for sale or trade.

All that aside, I’ve heard about Kallmann syndrome before, and I’m glad that now DNA testing can enable doctors to fix babies born with it surgically in infancy, rather than a mistake being made.

And if the parents had chosen to go the female route on their ambiguously “gendered” baby after birth, it would have chosen to be a male about this same time.

And you claim to know this factoid how?

Did you actually read the article? She is genetically a female whose appearance at birth was sexually ambiguous. Because genetic testing was not available at the time, she was mistakenly raised as a male by her parents. Her surgery was not to change her gender, but to correct her appearance.

The transition could have been handled better by all concerned, but this is not your typical entitled transgender attention whore. This is a genuine intersex person.

It’s a personal issue.”

Wrong "Miss" Wager, your perverted, grotesque lifestyle is a very important issue to the parents of the children who you teach. If you were my grand children's teacher I'm certain that my son and daughter in law would immediately arrange to home school them if at all possible, or transfer them to a private school, preferably a private Christian school, if home schooling was not possible. In fact, my own 2 grandchildren,(grades 7&12) are both being schooled by their mother, and both are receiving a demonstrably better education than their contemporaries in local public schools, and probably better than almost all other public schools.

A quality education is important in today's dog eat dog economy. But high moral standards are even more important, and a kid gets both by home schooling, or at least by a good private school.

Possibly true.

The real test to prove this is whether this person is an LGBTXYZBLTMAP activist now.

On Friday, you insult the chemistry teacher and he punches you out. On Monday, insult the chemistry teacher and she bitch slaps you. Either way... at 6’ 6” and 300 pounds, it gonna hurt.

This isn’t the usual gender “choice” story, though. The poor guy/girl got dealt a really unusual, confusing, and difficult hand. OTOH, the school could have encouraged him to “change” between terms... like Xmas vacation or over the summer. It would have been easier all around.

Nice try, but still no excuse for piss-poor judgment. There were other options at their disposal; the kids must come first.

Why not do us all a favor and actually read the story before you say something stupid again.

This "guy" has two X chromosomes, which makes him a girl. The FACT that she was born with non gender specific genitalia means that she has physical issues.

Instead of doing genetic testing she was given gender reassignment surgery and forced to live as a male with the aid of hormonal injections.

She has now decided to live according to her genetic makeup instead of the lie her parents arbitrarily chose.

Now how exactly does that make her a pervert?

And you KNOW this because....?

You do realize that she has two X chromosomes right, that makes her a female.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The school needs to look up the meaning of the word “private”.

It could have been handled much better. There was no need to subject the students to this. A medical leave of absence was definitely in order.
