How Do we Decide Who Is a ‘Real’ Candidate for President?
Washington Post ^

Posted on 03/26/2015 11:06:28 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Ted Cruz was not the first person to officially declare his presidential candidacy when he announced on Monday. Scores of people are running just as officially as the junior senator from Texas, as measured by their having filled out the proper form with the Federal Election Commission. So why do we consider Cruz a "real" candidate and those other 200-odd candidates not worth mentioning?

Is it viability? Few people think Cruz has much of a shot at the Republican nomination. The Upshot's Nate Cohn makes the case against his doing so pretty concretely. We looked at the strength of his plan to ride tea party support on Wednesday: He trails among tea party voters badly.

Here's another question. Very few people consider Donald Trump a real candidate for president. He has threatened to start an exploratory committee, which means next to nothing. In part, he's treated as a joke because that's how he treats the idea of running for president: as a lark. But in part, it's also because he consistently says things that make it hard for him to be taken seriously. He has perfected the ability to sound like a dope in fewer than 140 characters, all bravado and extremism and sales pitches. He's a @carnivalbarker, and he gets the respect that that deserves.

"How do we decide..."

You go into a 'voting booth' and cast a vote!

To paraphrase an icon lauded by the Post, “It all depends on the meaning of ‘we’”.

WaPo = stupidity

Early caucuses and primaries are ideal for getting throwaway looks at would-be candidates. They just need to be rotated a bit through several other small states.

Your political and media betters, and their pollsters, who only poll the names they're told to, tell you.

We no longer have government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

That's been replaced by government of the money, by the money, and for the money.

I hope WP isn’t holding their breath; ONE DAY: $ONE MILLION dollars was donated to Cruz.

Second Day - $75,000.

Left has no idea what’s going on. But, we do.

Except, all but the chosen few candidates are blackballed from the outset.

When this tactic no longer works they’ll move on to the ever popular “Blackout” strategy.

We the people can overcome it is we don’t just sit back and wait for Cruz to win. We’ve got to be his army to carry him to victory.

It seems to me that the main drawback to a Cruz presidency is one fewer Cruz in the Senate.
