Germanwings pilot was locked out of cockpit before crash in France
New York Times ^ | 25 March | Nikola Clark

PARIS — As officials struggled Wednesday to explain why a jet with 150 people on board crashed in relatively clear skies, an investigator said evidence from a cockpit voice recorder indicated one pilot left the cockpit before the plane’s descent and was unable to get back in.

Perhaps some quickly accessible equipment (locked, with key possessed by trusted crew) capable of breaching such armored doors should be available.

I've got an easier and cheaper solution. Make the pilots wear Depends Diapers. No more bathroom visits until the plane lands.

Cam cameras: Why don’t planes have cam cameras sending video back to the airport air controllers?

It’s all over CNN. They just told exactly how that door mechanism works, with picture. It has to be a deliberate act to lock someone out, so that the access number keyed into the keypad won’t work. There are three lock positions: “Unlock” “Norm” and “Lock”. The lock position is usually in “Norm” so if one crew member leaves, he or she is able to override the locked door through keypad access. The person(s) in the cockpit have the ability to disable that function by moving the lever to “LOCK”.

There is also supposed to be someone else from the flight crew in the cockpit if one pilot leaves, as there is always supposed to be two people in the cockpit.

...”Cam cameras: Why don’t planes have cam cameras sending video back to the airport air controllers?”....

That’s next.

But I have to say I wouldn’t like a camera in my face while I’m working. Though they are throughout many businesses etc. One in your face is another story.

Can’t say, but there is a fail safe to prevent lockout. The remaining pilot has to force a lock at that point.

Can’t say, but there is a fail safe. This is suicide.

They have access keypads to override the locked door, but people in the cockpit have the ability to block that.

Looks like I could override that with just a rubber band.

Two persons in the cockpit at all times?

I heard on a tv talk show that in the United States, a cockpit must have at least two persons in it at all times.

For instance, if a pilot leaves, a stewardess must take his place so that there are always two persons in the cockpit at all times.

But the tv person wasn't sure what the law in Europe was concerning two persons in the cockpit at all times.

“He shudda gone pee pee before takeoff. Now see what happens.”

Walking the length of the passenger cabin early in the flight would seem to be a good idea. A proactive thing.

Normally.

And why not give little things called “keys” to those who might need to run to the john during a long flight, just in case.

Except there is one setting of an Airbus door for which there is no key, only a time lock. And it is set from inside the cockpit -- to keep the terrorists out.

In this case, it may have kept the terrorist in...

I always thought another member of the crew had to be in the cockpit with the pilot if one of them stepped outside-— that why, since cockpit doors lock; if the one on the inside became incapacitated, there would still be someone to open the door.

Yes, it’s unbelievable.

Or tell them “Some idiot put a disgusting bumper sticker on your car”.

How do they know it was a pilot knocking on the door? Do they have any idea what was going on in the passenger cabin?

The remaining pilot had to takeTWO intentional actions: set the door to “lock” and set the autopilot to descend.

No way this can be due to incapacitation.

Actually, that crash of the Airbus A300B4-600R in November 2001 was definitely NOT terrorism--note no bomb residue or fragmentation pattern consistent with a MANPAD warhead was ever found. What really happened was that the plane flew into the strong wake turbulence of a Japan Airlines 747-400 and the flight crew did not respond the turbulence in the proper manner.
