Haunted by the Past: A Criminal Record Shouldn't Ruin a Career

In the past year, alleged assaults on passengers by Uber drivers in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, and other cities have called into question whether Uber’s employment screening procedures are keeping their customers safe. As allegations of driver misconduct mount, a growing consensus has emerged: private background checks are not good enough. Uber, like most companies, currently screens job applicants using background checks run by private consumer reporting agencies (CRAs). These checks are compiled through manual searches of local court records.

Jumping of of a building shouldn’t make people fall.
Spending more money than you have shouldn’t make people broke.
Eating a dozen donuts and a slice of cheesecake at every single meal shouldn’t make people fat...

I can vomit out idiot concepts like this all day.

As an employer who can be held financially responsible if an employee hurts a customer, you should have the right to screen applicants, especially if they are going to interact with clients.
If you from the goodness of your heart want to give an ex-con another chance, that is a good thing, but it is your call and you have the right, sometimes the duty, to say no.

Of course they should in many cases.
We do not allow convcted pedophiles to hold jobs that put them in contact with children.
You would not hire a convcted rapist to run the local YWCA
If you have several convicts on record for theft and fraud, I am not hiring you as a bank clerk.

You can have a past criminal record of assaults and still become a licensed tow truck driver. In Houston there was a mandatory “breakdown” town off the highway (you couldn’t even wait for your AAA or other roadside service towtruck to get there). Some of the selected tow truck companies had a history of employing violent criminals.

What a wonderful thing to be told that you MUST get in a vehicle with such a man. But Democrat Bill White ‘meant well’.

I know it's off topic..but a criminal record didn't hurt these two..

Depends on the record. E.g., some states classify speeding as misdemeanors, regardless of the amount driven over the limit.

If someone rejected my application because of something like that I’d want to know. Background checks are ok in my book, but just like with credit checks for loans, I’d want to know if that was the basis of my rejection so I could correct errors if any.

Keep in mind the folks doing the check may only be checking on name. Employers don’t get your SSN until after you are hired.

My questions are this. How long ago was is? What was it for?

Criminal behavior can take three forms. One is evil (least common). One is stupid (most common). One (rarely) is a railroading where the real criminals were the state. I'd consider a 2nd chance for some of the stupid stuff if it was a long time ago because many that did something stupid feel like they need to prove themselves. If it was evil, that's another story.

I agree - Uber is involved in the case of the salesman who disappeared from a conference; he was later found in a small lake on a golf course (in Palm Desert, CA).

And .. to add to the mystery, his demise was eerily similar to the several deaths in the Great Lakes area. All of them “drowned”???

Nobody will talk about this.

Just protect yourself and don’t use the Uber service.

Slightly off topic but related...
I noticed my recent car insurance had a new addenda
that plainly stated if I was using my car “for hire”
and I got into an accident, that the coverage would not apply.
It seemed to be directly aimed at these Uber-type companies.

Makes sense. If you’re using your vehicle for commercial purposes you need to purchase the appropriate coverage.

Yep.

As well: Despite all the media coverage, those that say they’ll use the service regardless or defend it as some sort of ‘free market capitalism’ still have NOT read the TOU...

Most non violent first time offenders can have their record expunged if they complete a program offered by the court. It doesn’t happen in all cases but it does in many cases. That’s the one chance people get to learn their lesson and straighten their lives out. Multiple arrests and convictions means a knucklehead who can’t be trusted.

Here we go again. Soon, it will be racial discrimination to do criminal background checks and robbery, rape and murder will sky-rocket.
