An Amish family faces eviction from their home after being found in contempt of court for refusing to comply with building codes on the grounds that doing so would violate the religious communitys ban on modern technology.
At a Monday hearing, a Circuit Court judge ordered the Eau Claire County sheriffs office to evict Amos and Vera Borntreger, a farming couple with four children under the age of six, from their home in the Old Order Amish community of Fairchild, Wisconsin.

The Amish object to the new UDC requirements that require modern technology such as smoke alarmsa modern convenience expressly prohibited by their religion,
Not all Amish spurn modern conveniences but this blanket statement makes it sound like it.
Thanks for the ping!
He can stop any government process dead in its tracks.
By extension then you agree Obama can do anything he likes too, because he is above the law as well.
“’County corporation counsel Heather Wolske said the rules are intended to ensure the dwellings safety.
‘What were requiring the defendants to do is file an application, and drawings, and permit fees to obtain a building permit so that a building inspector can go in the home and inspect it,’ Ms. Wolske told WEAU-TV.”
Who lives in the building?
Who owns the building?
Do you seriously think anyone believes you are more concerned about their safety than they are? Do you think anybody thinks you are AT ALL concerned about their safety?
Why should the comply with your decree, just so you can send someone into their home to “inspect” it?
INSPECT THIS! [o]
Maybe the Amish can declare the judge’s house a UN World Heritage Site.
All of them don’t need to agree for it to be expressly prohibited by their religion.
I refer you to the Presbyterians and their views on gay marriage.
Are you sure of that?
Historical? Too new to be that.
Cultural? Perhaps.
Can you provide proof that Walker can do that? I would think a legislature would be the only governing entity with the power to make such a designation. However, if you can back up your claim then I will gladly admit to my ignorance.
That’s wrong with you? Don’t you know that executives have supreme magical powers?
The classic case is yelling, "Fire!" in a crowded theater, which presents an immediate danger to safety.
Here, it is clear that smoke alarms do improve safety.
However, there is no immediate danger: every Amish member of the community has grown up without smoke alarms and there is no mention of the Amish dying in droves from house fires.
The attorneys for the Amish should file a request for an injunction in a Federal court and sue the county there.
A dog is just as good a smoke alarm as anything electrical. They should just tell the state that they have installed a bloodhound.
I don’t get the story at that link — just some irritating question
— I’m gone.
This article makes very little sense to me. The family is already living in a home, why would they need to sign a building permit?
Are we to understand that they are getting kicked out of their home because there are no smoke detectors? Seems a bit over the top to me. While I do have smoke detector’s, I don’t agree that the government should be able to require them for your own home.
Is the permit an excuse for the inspectors to find something worse that they can use as an excuse for the eviction?
How much land goes with the home?
“Walker is the chief executive of the state.
He can stop any government process dead in its tracks.”
Well, I’m not sure I agree with you, but if he did override a statute, he’d be no better than Obola. Walker has done an exceptional job and governor, but I want to know where he stands on a lot of national issues of importance that have nothing to do with what he does running Wisconsin.
Local corruption suggested, led perhaps by a member of that township board. Democrat area in Ron Kinds district. Sounds like they have a parcel that some donor is interested in developing. Typical heavy handed democrat bureaucratic tactics. It isn’t the EPA it’s the local township zoning board that’s doing this.

Probably our fault. They've heard that whenever a crime occurs and the criminal is not described in the news media, people assume the criminal is Amish.
Amish family facing eviction in Wisconsin for failing to follow building codes. (The first couple of comments are somehow making this Scott Walker’s fault.)
