An Amish family faces eviction from their home after being found in contempt of court for refusing to comply with building codes on the grounds that doing so would violate the religious communitys ban on modern technology.
At a Monday hearing, a Circuit Court judge ordered the Eau Claire County sheriffs office to evict Amos and Vera Borntreger, a farming couple with four children under the age of six, from their home in the Old Order Amish community of Fairchild, Wisconsin.

Was their house there before the zoning laws?
Is their property highly desirable?
Did the government know anything about this secret group of people and their very obscure practice of eschewing modern conveniences as an integral part of their faith?
And most importantly: WHO WERE THEY HURTING, ENDANGERING, OR OTHERWISE ENCROACHING ON????
My suggestion would be to call out the National Guard to surround their home.
The Amish object to the new UDC requirements that require modern technology such as smoke alarmsa modern convenience expressly prohibited by their religion, said the National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom, Eau Claire Chapter, in a Monday statement.
Anyone who has been around the Amish know that different groups of Amish follow different sets of rules set by their Bishops and church elders. It's difficult to get different groups of Amish to agree on anything.
However if it was a mussie family, well then ....
Why are they after the Amish all of a sudden?
Here in Iowa rural homes have always been exempt from building and zoning codes.
I did see that some Uniparty legislator was trying to bring that proud tradition to an end this session.
I need to check up on the status of that atrocity of a bill...
Because the Amish own a lot of land that the government would like to take over.
“in a statement. Sand frac mines have already made generous offers on some Amish farms.
And THAT is the whole all of wax.
Like so many Native American tribes before them - when found to have land valuable to the big boys -
"Fick mich? Nein, fick DICH!"
These silly amish wouldnt have to worry about feeding four hungry kids if they had availed themselves of the Obamabot Party’s abortion facilities. /s
Crush, Kill, Destroy. Democrats.
Because of Free Republic....
Think about it. :)
What leads you to that conclusion? Are you always so quick to judgment before knowing any of the facts?
I haven't made any decisions as to whom I ultimately support. But my favorites right this moment are Cruz & Walker. So if that makes me a liberal, then perhaps I am a liberal in the classic sense, which is far different than liberal in today's sense. Because I lean heavily conservative from social to fiscal issues. On top of that I think for myself and draw my own conclusions.
No one can serve two masters.
What is so puzzling? They can disagree on many thing while agreeing on several.
Besides, the measure for the legality of this heavy-handed grab is not that all, or even most, Amish agree with the standards of this group.
Aaaaaah! It all suddenly comes into clear focus.
Good reply.
Sure he can....just designate the Amish property an “historic and cultural” building ...exempt from local zoning laws.
Some things never change.
“’Its one of those things where the judge was emphatic that this doesnt go against their religion, its about getting permits’”
Pardon me while I call BS.
The sheriff could slow-play it, or refuse. It is obvious what’s going on here - in the first place, how is the tyrant, er, judge so sure the doesn’t go against their religion? It very clearly does - the government knows it does, the government knows they are committed to their faith, and the government wants their land.
Plain as day. Someone ought to be shot.
I know nothing more than what I have seen him do in Wisconsin, along with some recent statements he has made. So I am not sure why you think I know any more than do you about Walker. My point was why would his actions on this lone issue dictate his Presidential qualifications, especially since I do not know if he can even do anything.
