Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand: "We accomplished a lot of things last night with assistance of Kenner police, FBI, ATF and others."
Normand clarifies some inaccuracies reported by sheriff's office last night. Says no traveler was grazed by a bullet as originally reported. TSA agent was being chased by Richard White as he waved the machete. JSPO lieutenant's first shot wounded female TSA agent when bullet passed through White and struck agent in tricep.
Suspect White left a bag in the concourse that produced "a gas smell," Normand said. Suspect was not a taxi driver as originally believed. Bomb squad found smoke bombs inside White's car, along with tanks in trunk of acetylene, freon and oxygen. Inside his bag left in concourse were six molotov cocktails, a barbecue lighter, and smoke bombs.
"He's been unconscious. He is alive. We hope to talk to him. We don't know if that's going to happen," Normand said. Family has told authorities of mental illness, but also of a cool, calm demeanor. Wife and children have been permitted to see White in hospital, the sheriff said, because they have been so cooperative.
"All the folks at the checkpoint did everything humanly possible to protect the public," Normand said. "They stood their ground as much as they could, and caused some confusion where he turned back down the security lane. Had he made it down the concourse, who knows?"

Looks like a Ferguson lunatic attacking what he perceived as a soft target in a uniform. TSA cops are not exactly on their toes, because they rarely have to do anything other than pat down grannies. So his thinking was that they’re going be careless and will be easy targets.
Fortunately, they weren’t. I have heard about wasp spray or bug spray being used in attacks before. Does this appear on some jihadi website, or did he just come up with it from Southern lore?
The JPSO deputies have a reputation for not playing around with criminals. Harry's boys don't play.
Sounds like he was planning more than spraying bug spray and hacking with a machete, but maybe didn't have the smarts to get it together and do serious damage ...

People do keep it on hand where I live (in the South) as a sort of quickie self-defense thing. It gives you time to run away, at least, and if you’re armed, it may give you time to get out the weapon.
I’ve never heard of it being used in an attack before, but maybe it has been and the press doesn’t report it. If so, LE need to start training their people. Although looking at how fast the TSA people responded, I’m wondering if maybe they already have.

I read that locals who knew him said he was a Jehovah’s Witness and very into that.
At 63, and an Army Vet, seems unlikely he would be getting ideas from a Jihadi website.

They wanted to speak with him, trying to get something on motive. But now they can’t.
