Ferry trapped in ice off Nova Scotia since Wednesday with 40 aboard

Forty passengers are still stuck aboard the MV Blue Puttees in the ice off Cape Breton.

The Marine Atlantic ferry, which connects Nova Scotia to Newfoundland, has been there since Wednesday afternoon.

The Louis S. St-Laurent — the largest icebreaker in the Canadian Coast Guard’s fleet — has been trying to remove the vessel but so far hasn’t had any luck.

“The ice is so pressurized and thick right now in that area they are unable to get through the ice as well. ...” Marine Atlantic spokesperson Darrell Mercer said.

“This year, [ice] moved in early to mid-February, and it doesn’t show any signs of going away any time soon,” he said. “I’ve heard the Canadian Coast Guard say it’s the worst of the 30-year averages they’ve been keeping.”

Geez, again. It’s costing them more to risk getting constantly stuck than it would to cancel travel until it warms up.

From what I have read there tends to be ice in the area every February. Normally it is not thick enough to stop the ferries. Fairly soon the totalitarian drones will be claiming this is loose ice that used to be up in the arctic but is now here due to global warming....or some such nonsense.

Remember when the Green Peace greenies ship was icebound on the west coast a while back? The Coast Guard had to rescue them. How hilarious was that.

MV Blue Puttees passenger/vehicle ferry operated by Marine Atlantic between the islands of Newfoundland and Cape Breton in eastern Canada. She is named after the nickname of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.

During The Great War the battalion-sized regiment was the only North American unit to fight in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915.

The regiment was virtually wiped out at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Since then July 1 has been marked as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Of the 780 men who went forward only about 110 survived unscathed, of whom only 68 were available for roll call the following day.

One of the most compelling maritime mysteries of all time was the Sir John Franklin’s doomed expedition, which got trapped in the ice in 1846.

Don't mess with Mother Nature....

The SS Terra Nova, the ship that took Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team on their ill-fated expedition to the Antarctic a century ago, was found on the seabed off Greenland.

LOL. BTW did you see that the ol’ captain of the Costa Concordia recently got sentenced to 16 years in the slammer.

Well... Bye!

And the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent is slated for decommissioned in 2017. They started a new build effort in 2008, anticipating a 10 year replacement effort. As is, the St-Laurent has been in service duration sufficient to have been converted to diesel electric operation from steam turbine.

Based on the vessels ability to make steady 3 knot breaking 1.9 meters of ice and pressure ridges of 12 m depth, conditions must be exceptionally poor in the area. The USGC Polar Sea and CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent went together on a joint exercise to the North Pole back in ‘94.

I did.

*The sentence handed Francesco Schettino was significantly less than the 26 years and 3 months requested by prosecutors, who insisted that the Concordia’s captain was a “reckless idiot.”*
