SAN JOSE, Calif. The days of humans driving their own cars are numbered, according to Elon Musk.
The reason, he said, is advances in sensor and software technology will eventually make cars' onboard computers safer and better drivers than humans wielding "two-ton death machines." The Tesla CEO shared his thoughts on the future of self-driving vehicles during the keynote presentation at NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, where he appeared onstage with NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.
"In the distant future," he said, "They may outlaw driven cars because they're too dangerous."

""Autonomy is about what level of reliability and safety do you want," Musk said.
So THAT'S what Autonomy is these days??
Cue “Red Barchetta.”
I’m hoping lefties will be illegal...
Motorcycles and Bicyclists won’t care who runs them off then road.
Hal - You were supposed to turn left to enter the Driverless Vehicle Recycling Depot.
Hal - The road ends up ahead at the cliff!
Hal !
Hal ?
“Hal - we’re going over the cliff!”
SORRY DAVE...
Burn him he’s a witch!
He’s not wrong, but we are a long long way from that.
We probably wouldn’t outlaw human driving, but the computers will need a way of proving their innocence when the humans try to blame the computers for their own stupid mistakes.

In the future, human driven vehicles may be illegal?
Duh. It’s not about if. It’s about when.
Elon Musk just jumped the preverbial shark.
The shark is pissed.
My exact thought.
Pulling a Fonzi on the shark? I think he was trying to sound deep and prophetic and all that.
He’s a mooch off ZEV credits and other subsidies. I am pro-electric (or pro-anything innovative) but don’t want the forward looking folks in the government to put some well-connected folks ahead of real innovation.
It’s just today’s effort by him to seem futuristic and profound.
And if I were a terrorist with access to the right hardware and software, I could kill an impressive number of people during rush hour. That, or just randomly have people drive off overpasses at 100MPH.
I don’t think all of those Law Enforcement Agencies are just going to let all that speeding ticket revenue “just dry up.” Do you?
Is this the same NVIDIA who’s video chip fried my laptop a few years back?
Anybody who ever doubted this was the direction they wanted to go is a moron.
Freedom is the ability to go where you want when you want.
No interest in being a slave.
Musk gave tons of money to Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012, and in return, Musk gets huge government contracts funded with taxpayer dollars from Obama.
Hmmmmm.....corruption?
” Im hoping lefties will be illegal...”
and Establishment Republicans.
If I was an automaker the phrase “two-ton death machine” would never fall out of my mouth.
