The death sentence is among other things, an exercise in futility.

It solves nothing, it heals nothing, it satisfies vengeance which many confuse for justice, it reconciles nothing, is irreversible, and is unjust.

The recidivism rate is zero, though.

I spend very little time worrying about criminals that have been executed. It occupies number 2,343 on my concern list.

You are aware, aren't you that God decreed that "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." Genesis 9:6?

I noticed that you use God in your tagline. Are you suggesting that God's decreed punishment for murder "solves nothing, it heals nothing, it satisfies vengeance which many confuse for justice, it reconciles nothing, is irreversible, and is unjust."?

Do you believe that you are more wise, compassionate and holy than God?

“it satisfies vengeance”

Do you have a thing against vengeance?

A very recent study, most comprehensive ever done on the death penalty, concluded that for every murderer executed, ten people were spared being murdered.

There is a reason why people who are actively pro-abortion are almost universally against the death penalty. Do you know the reason?

We are in a very small minority here but we are in agreement.

Actually it deters some and is justice to those of us who think this way

I’m all for it

But I have questions about this circumstance....severe brain trauma or surgical excision do alter personality markedly

The dulling especially when loss is frontal lobes raises my interest

I have personal experience with this

Ted Bundy hasn’t raped and killed another woman since he was put to death. Not one. He was in jail in Colorado. He escaped and raped and killed. Florida put him to death. He no longer rapes and kills. Get it?

Yeah; but the dead don’t get out of prison and kill someone else.

All true when there is not a speedy carriage of judicial decision— ie... execution. The constant delaying dilutes the value of the law to the public as a deterrent. Makes the law meaningless. Will say that life in prison, with life in isolation would be a worse fate to those who wanted freedom.

Totally agree with you. WI has life in prison and abolished its death penalty in 1853.

The death sentence is not intended to perform any of the above feats of majic. It only does two things; provides a certain degree of deterrence, and guarantees against recidivism.

Please provide your reasoning for calling it "unjust". I've read the whole thread (thus far) and haven't seen anything resembling a rationale behind your statement - only the assertion itself.

I decided to frame my inquiry based on the one tenet of your argument that is actually debatable in terms of logic - the "nothing" arguments are clearly opinion based on one's frame of reference, and the irreversible argument is irrefutable (but also immaterial).

My opposition to the death penalty is based more on practicality. To me, there’s none of the circus and liberal media/celebrity crap involved with life in prison, and watching a scumbag die in a 5x7 cell when he’s old is more enjoyable. I would support the death penalty in extreme instances, such as serial killers and killers of law enforcement and children.
