Jeb Bush, 20 Years After Conversion, Is Guided by His Catholic Faith
NY Times ^ | 03-17-2015 | MICHAEL PAULSON

Posted on 03/17/2015 11:42:10 AM PDT by NRx

...Many of his priorities during his two terms as governor of Florida aligned with those of the Catholic Church — including his extraordinary, and unsuccessful, effort to force a hospital to keep Terri Schiavo on life support, as well as less well known, and also unsuccessful, efforts to appoint a guardian for the fetus of a developmentally disabled rape victim, and to prevent a 13-year-old girl from having an abortion. He even, during his first year in office, signed a law creating a “Choose Life” license plate.

He differed from his church, significantly and openly, over capital punishment; 21 prisoners were executed by the state on his watch, the most under any Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. But he has also won praise from Catholic officials for his welcoming tone toward immigrants, and his relatively centrist positions on education — two issues in which he is at odds with the right wing of his party.

This is NOT a pro-Bush fluff post. FWIW, I am pretty much done with the Bush dynasty. But I did think it an interesting article.

This is not accurate.
Bush did not help Ms. Schiavo.

He could have.

But he did not.

He could have shared the champagne he drank
with his customs-evading wife. But he did NOT.

He sat there and let Terry Schiavo die. he could have fixed it in one minute with an executive order, but he refused to do it.

The NYT saying anything positive about Jeb Bush should be a huge red warning flag.

Gee, I followed the whole thing. Missed that part.

Do remember where he gave in and let Judge Greer off the girl to show how powerful he was.

Jeb has a 40 yr relationship and marriage to his Mexican born wife. They speak Spanish to each other. I say NOPe to GOPe because even if he's Catholic and fluent in Spanish, he won't get the Latin vote. However, he'll surely get the MSM vote for proper GOPe representation.

Jeb, you're never going to get past the primaries, unless they are all OPEN primaries where the Democrats will vote you in.

As Ruberto Duran said, "NO MAS".

“He differed from his church, significantly and openly, over capital punishment; 21 prisoners were executed by the state on his watch, the most under any Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.”

This is wrong.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church allows that the State DOES HAVE AUTHORITY to impose capital punishment, although non-lethal means to prevent the murderer from a repeat offense are preferred.

“The Church’s unchangeable constant teaching is that punishments, including the death penalty, may be levied for four reasons:

1. Rehabilitation - The sentence of death can and sometimes does move the condemned person to repentance and conversion. The death penalty may be a way of achieving the criminal’s reconciliation with God.

2. Defense against the criminal - Capital punishment is an effective way of preventing the wrongdoer from committing future crimes and protecting society from him.

3. Deterrence - Executions may create a sense of horror that would prevent others from being tempted to commit similar crimes.

4. Retribution - Guilt calls for punishment. The graver the offense, the more severe the punishment ought to be. In Holy Scripture death is regarded as the appropriate punishment for serious transgressions. Thomas Aquinas held that sin calls for the deprivation of some good, such as, in serious cases, the good of temporal or even eternal life. The wrongdoer is placed in a position to expiate his evil deeds and escape punishment in the next life.”

(Dulles, Avery Cardinal. “Catholicism & Capital Punishment”)

What makes Jeb Bush a non-Catholic, my guess is that he is a pretty devout Catholic.

Jeb Bush doesn’t vote democrat, but since he converted from Episcopalian to Catholic, he seems to still be a pretty good Catholic.

Nice to have but keep it out of governance. We have a constitution even though Obama and Holder have shredded it.

“History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance, of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.” -— Thomas Jefferson
