Mayor de Blasio said he won’t agree to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade unless it makes additional changes to welcome gay groups.
The parade, which de Blasio boycotted last year, agreed for the first time this year to let one openly gay group, NBC’s LGBT employee contingent, participate in the march.
But de Blasio said Sunday after participating in the alternative, gay-friendly St. Pat’s for All Parade in Queens that those changes don’t go far enough.
The St. Patricks Day Parade in Sunnyside, Queens was a snowy affair, led by city leaders including Mayor Bill de Blasio on March 1, 2015.
“I’m not ready to commit to marching, because all we’ve heard is that one delegation related to NBC will be allowed to have members of the LGBT community in it,” he said.
“A lot of people feel, I think rightfully, that that is too small a change to merit a lot of us participating who have wanted to see an inclusive parade.”
De Blasio called the parade’s policy change “obviously a pretty narrow concession, and I think we’d like to see something that’s more inclusive.”
He said he’s still open to a deal with parade organizers in the days before the March 17 parade if they’re willing to make unspecified additional concessions.
“We need something more for it to really feel like we’ve turned the corner here,” he said.
De Blasio spoke after sloshing through the snow with a small but committed group of revelers celebrating the gay-friendly parade.
To make matters even more difficult, No. 7 train service was suspended on Sunday.
The mayor also reiterated his wish to ban the city’s carriage horse industry, which has many Irish drivers and was represented by a contingent in Sunday’s parade.

The MA State Knights of Columbus dropped out of this years’ parade in Boston. We had not marched in it for 20 years. When two more big gay groups got added we said no more. Even the Saint Patrick’s Float was pulled from the parade. The KOC web site now refers to the parade as the “Evacuation Day” parade. which is a jab at the Suffolk County Employees who get the 17th off as a “Holiday” because it coincides with Saint Patrick’s Day in Boston. This tradition has come to an end.
