TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) How many people have a gun in their home?
Well its not as many as you might think, thats according to new numbers fired out by a U.S. Trend survey.
News 10 spoke to Owner of Top Guns, Steve Ellis, to find out the reason for the decline.
Hunting was the one reason they gave for their numbers being down as far as household ownership, said Ellis.
According to the survey only 32% of Americans own a gun themselves or live in a house with someone who does, that number matches a record low set in 2010. Its a significant decline since the early 1980s, when about half of Americans told researchers there was a gun inside their home.
However individual ownership is still steady and in some regions on the rise, said Ellis.
Data from the FBIs National Instant Criminal Background Check system shows that in recent years theres actually been an increase in the number of background checks being run, suggesting the total number of firearms being purchased is going up.
So why the decline in gun ownership but an increase in sales? Theres no clear answer, but Ellis has some ideas.
Certainly since we are in an economy that isnt thriving as well as it perhaps could be, so maybe there is more people getting together and sharing a home.
However, in the Wabash Valley theres an upward trend in both sales and ownership.
Were not seeing a decrease in hunters, but we are also seeing ownership for defensive purposes on the increase, said Ellis.
More women are among those who are looking to arm themselves.
When it comes to women were seeing more come in for self defense purposes not so much for hunting.
Ellis said despite the survey he doesnt see the boom in business going down anytime soon.
I think that ownership is still very prevalent, and its still a part of who we are here in the United States.
Or maybe those who want to answer on survey they have guns in their home is low.
Who do you trust with that information?
That just means the other 2/3's are not telling, which is the correct response to a survey of this type.
The numbers on the decline of gun ownership are directly tied to the dramatic increase in numbers of horrific boating accidents.
Tragic.
Boating.
Accident.
Ta-da!
Per capita ownership of firearms in the US has doubled since 1968.

"Hello, this is Acme Polling. Do you have a firearm in your home?"

"Hmmm... I'll put that down as a no."

All right, I'll 'fess up. It's me.
It was a catastrophe!
If I were asked, I would not tell anyone anything about any alleged firearms.
More guns sold in the last 8 years then in the 20 to 30 before it.
But nobody owns them.
Odd.
Maybe this is what they mean, when they say guns are on the street. They mean it literally. The guns are literally on the street, owned by no one.
Where do they get their data I wonder. From doctors? Raise your hand if you lie to those guys when they ask if you have guns in your house.
Gun control.
Hmm, I seems everyone is questioning the data.

NONE of the people I know (mostly all hunters with what a Leftist would describe as mini-arsenals) would admit to having a single gun in the house in this day and age.

I put a server in my basement and my guns disappeared.
“But nobody owns them.”
__________-
It means that fewer people own guns, but the ones who do own more than one.
