Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and presidential hopeful, recently apologized for a statement in which he said being gay is "absolutely" a choice.
In an interview on CNN, the potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate commented that "a lot of people who go into prison, go into prison straight, and when they come out they're gay, so did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question."

Back in my younger days, I had a girlfriend who was bi. She could enjoy sex with either a guy or another girl. She could thus choose to be either exclusively straight or exclusively lesbian. I also had a male friend who was bi.
I think there is a spectrum, where those at one end have zero ability to be aroused by someone of the same sex, and at the other end zero ability to be aroused by the opposite sex. Those somewhere in the middle can choose either way.
That’s the thing, there is no test to conclusively predict who will turn out what. That is what science is supposed to do. IMHO, they don’t want a test because that would mean people can treat the condition if they know the exact gene and how it manifests, so even if true, science will never, for political purposes ever bother finding or revealing what the so-called gene is. However, genetics is not an excuse for behavior. For instance, maybe I am genetically programmed to feel attracted to women in general, but it doesn’t make me cheating on my wife not a sin.

Only problem is this: we can’t test who is genuinely homosexual and who isn’t. Anyone who knew Bill De Blassio’s wife as a lesbian had no way of predicting she would end up with Bill, they can claim it after the fact, but that doesn’t count.

If it were an immutable genetic setting that was impossible to change, identical twins would both be gay, if one of them was.

It has ranged from 20 percent to 50 percent depending on which twin study you are referring to. There’s definitely not 100 percent genetic determinism. There’s definitely some element of nurture involved.

Gore Vidal had an interesting take on this. Speaking from his own experience, he didn’t believe there was any such thing as a homosexual. He said it was something he did, not something he was.
He was saying that back in the 70s. He’d have to be re-educated if he were alive and saying those things today.
