Mercy killings are forbidden for a number of reasons. One being it isn’t the role of untrained soldiers to make medical decisions as to which type wound is, or is not recoverable.

But it was the unspoken elephant in the room.............

Did you read it?

Yes.

the summary of the article is bombardment has a role, it is not a magic bullet.

Agreed. It will be interesting once the war is over to learn if something similar was the case at Dunkirk. I got a sense that the Wehrmacht didn't have much of a role at Dunkirk... that it was for some reason a Luftwaffe show.

The 5th Marine Division returned to Camp Tarawa, Hawaii and remained there until the end of the war. After the Japanese surrender they set sail for Japan where they occupied the southern island of Kyūshū. The division left Japan in November 1945 and arrived in San Diego, California the week of Christmas 1945. The majority of the division's Marines were discharged shortly thereafter the division was deactivated on 5 February 1946. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5th_Marine_Division_(United_States) ----------------------------------- There is a reference to the evacuation of the 4th and 5th from Iwo in the Nimitz report. The future is recovery and occupation duty. They were reactivated for Vietnam. I have 3 photo books of the SpearHead, They are almost like yearbooks with lots of pictures and captions but little writing. The first is boot camp, second is Iwo Jima, and the 3rd is occupation.

Re the mercey killing case, the article implies the person was pinned in he wreckage, not that he was actually dying of wounds. To me it is more likely he was being saved from being painfully burned to death and there was no way to extract him from the wreckage.

I think it is interesting the the Lt. Col. name is not listed and only the defense ttorney name is included.

But it was the unspoken elephant in the room.............

And for that reason, the officer was aquitted. somewhat analagous to a self-defense situation. If you use deadly force to defend yourself, be prepared to face a trial.

I presume the verdict was likely due to the presiding officers agreeing who would vote in which way so as to create a lasting impression that the defendant would have been executed, or sent away for a long time had it not been for some obscure technicality that resulted in one officer voting for his acquittal. That's my guess.

Yes but did the evidence support such scenario? That is why we have trials.

I may be confused about the time, but if I’m not mistaken, the planned 300 plane B-29 raid is scheduled to be at night.

No confusion at all. Nimitz says they will take off on the 9th to bomb Tokyo at 0330 on the 10th.

Interesting that the AF wants to bomb at night when air defenses have been so weak. Brass must be confident in the navigational systems and that targeting radar we've been hearing about. I'm still a little puzzled though.

At least bomb hits and resulting fires should be easy to observe.

I’ve been especially interested by the reports on Iwo. My Uncle was one on the first Marines who landed. I spent a good amount of time with him as a kid. More than any other WW2 vet. I always asked him about the war... He told be very little. Just enough, to make me understand why he didn’t want to talk about it.

Easy for Churchill to say, since the Russians will have to assault Berlin.

Did anything ever come out of post Cold war Russian archives giving an accurate count of Soviet casualties in taking Berlin?

Western documentary producers and authors seem to be in continual competition for who can with a straight face claim the highest casualty figures.

I guarantee if the Western Allies took Berlin, the fight would have been over quickly.

Germans had no choice but to try to fight the Russians because they knew what Russian occupation would mean.
