President Obamas drive to ban a popular form of ammunition used in the AR-15 and other rifles is drawing new fire from conservative groups representing gun owners as well as members of Congress.
A lawsuit has been threatened by the Second Amendment Foundation, which says the ploy is a backdoor attempt to do what the administration has failed to do through legislation ban the AR-15.
But the battle is heating up on both sides of the issue in Congress.
It is prudent to consider the likely use of ammunition in these non-sporting handguns, and the danger they present to law enforcement officers and our communities, Maloney said in the letter.
Maloney fought to ban the AR-15 rifle and similar weapons in a failed attempt back in 2013. Conservatives see the latest move by the Obama administration as a sneaky attempt to do the same thing, rendering the weapons effectively useless by removing ammunition from the market.
The Second Amendment Foundations general counsel sent a letter to the ATF Director B. Todd Jones Wednesday

Then we can proudly say that we tried to overcome tyranny with reason. But we all know how things usually go when you're dealing with tyrants.
Also from the article near the end:
The Second Amendment community is really all fired up on this, he told WND.

I’ve done my duty for today. Time for the night shift to stand watch and protect America from all enemies, foreign and domestic.
‘Nite all!
The most irrelevant statement possible.
Agreed, that AR-15 statement seemed a bit exaggerated. I know at least one friend with an AK-47 but none, myself included, have an AR-15. And use it for hunting?!
The 2nd Amendment isnt about hunting...its about keeping liberty from being trampled by tyrants foreign and domestic.
that wasnt the point if the statement
I have already spread the word at my work and felt the sting of condemnation of union reps.
I believe it’s the most popular rifle sold in the US and, depending on the state is used for hunting, especially varmint.
Also, the round itself is not limited to ARs but also bolts and other semis.
"The most irrelevant statement possible."
So let me clarify.
Nowhere in the Second Amendment will you find the words "popular," "target" or "hunting."
(Hence the irrelevance of that statement from the article.)
exactly
Somebody please educate me.
Not all 5.56mm (.223) ammo is targeted, right?
Is it just the 55 grain ammo?
Is it the most popular round in this caliber?
Not the cartridge, the bullet itself: SS109 and m855.
It’s just one projectile type, as someone else said. However, the problem isn’t just that they’re trying to ban SS109, it’s why. Their logic is that because SS109 has a steel instead of lead core, it is a dedicated armor piercing round (it’s not). If this logic is accepted, they will then ban all steel core ammo.
Fine, you say, lead core bullets are fine with me, been using them for decades. Well, not so fast.
As we all know, California is where liberals often try new ideas out. CA has a partial and probably soon to be total ban on lead cored bullets on an environmental basis. The plan appears to be:
1. Ban steel-core ammo as armor piercing.
2. Ban lead core ammo as an environmental pollutant.
3. So then what are you going to do? You can have your AR-15s, but it will bankrupt you to shoot them because the only option left is bismuth and thats expensive.
Just FYI, the EPA just closed the last lead smelter in the US. All US bullet production now comes from recycled batteries. It just takes one new EPA regulation to ban lead from being used in bullets, no law necessary.
It’s true about the SS109 - M855 bullet and its steel rod core. But it isn’t so much as a so-called AP round for rifles; they are contorting the 1986 law and using the AP provision for bullets in pistols (handguns).
Since the AR-15 variants have been modified and sold as PISTOLS now, they are saying it violates provisions of that law even though it (the round) can be used in rifles. So, instead of tracking down all the ‘assault weapons’ they sold to criminals in Mexico, they’ve been sitting round their desks and trying to twist laws, regulations, rulings and opinions to get rid of ammo altogether it seems.
As it stands now, their proposed ruling doesn’t ban the possession - just manufacture and sale to non military, non-LE customers.
Additionally, it not only applies to the core, but also to the jacket (there are steel jacketed bullets out there like the 30-06 M2 AP round).
Correction: 30-06 is steel core; not steel jacket. I was thinking mostly of the Russian and some of the Mauser rounds.
Pretty much a lost cause for me to contact, Steny Hoyer, Barbra Mikulski or Bed Cardin, Elijah Cummings or Chris VanHollen and the other liberal scum from this state.
We’re unfortunately infested with the liberal disease here. A new republican governor but he’s got his hands tied with the state legislator.
Thanks for the info. I will do it, but DC and the GOP stopped listening to their citizens years ago.
As a combat veteran, commissioned officer in the Military Police Corp, and former LE Officer, I fully understand the dangers of firearms. With that, I also understand the importance of firearms that legal US Citizens can purchase and use under current laws and regulations that adhere to the US Constitution, specifically the 2nd Amendment. This latest attack on a single type of ammo by this current Administration is no more than an attack on all types of ammo. This is childish and a blatant attack on those Citizens that legally own and operate such firearms.
It should not be allowed now or ever. I trust my fellow Citizen to do the right thing. Those incidents where a person strikes out and mis-use such firearms has never been tolerated and few compared to the check and balances that these weapons offer the common Citizen in protection of their property, life, family, and freedoms, which recently have been under attack on a consistent manner by this present Administration.
I did not vote for every state and federal Republican for w sweeping majority to see or even fear that such measures would be implemented or even discussed. End the Obama Administration now, impeach this traitor, and hold accountable not him, but his staff and other appointed officials for vagrantly violating the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights repeatedly.
I trust the US Citizen to buy whatever weapon they want and what ever caliber they need and use it in the correct manner and allow the law to deal with those individual cases where abuses of such freedoms are used to harm others. Without such weapons and ammo, there would be a majority of legal Citizens being harmed, victimized, and killed.
I do not support a ban on any ammo what so ever. I hope you and other members of the Republican Congress feel the same and take measure to halt Obama and his Administration from doing this and other vile measures that they have taken since he took office that has weakened the US overall. The Citizens of the US need to stay armed and not count on any government for sole protection, it has never worked in history and it will not work now.
Correct, they are contorting the law. The thing is, if they can class it as “AP” because of the steel core, they will then class all steel core ammo that way because these days there isn’t a single rifle caliber that there isn’t a pistol in. Yes, there is a .50BMG pistol.
When CA banned lead core bullets, they said that “well, you can use steel”. Well, if they ban all steel cores...
