My wife's uncle, who died several years ago, told of how his unit crossed the Rhine. They marched across it. They were ordered ahead at a reasonably shallow part. With full gear, they marched across. He could not swim, but it was no help, anyway, since their gear weighed too much to carry by swimming. When they got to the deepest parts, they would keep marching, holding their rifles high, and jump out of the water to breathe.
I wish now that I would have asked more about where, when, and what units.
