Should President Obama, or any President, be allowed to serve a third term?

With the anniversary of the 22nd Amendment on Friday, Constitution Daily looks at two hot-button topics: Should a President be allowed to serve a third term? And should members of Congress and the Supreme Court have term limits like the President?

View photo .obamainaug1 The 22nd Amendment brought the idea of term limits into the Constitution. When it was ratified in 1951, the amendment limited a President from effectively serving a third term, by saying that a President who won two elections can’t run a third time. The 22nd Amendment also bars a President from serving more than 10 years in office, in a case of a President who assumed office as Vice President.

For example, Vice President Gerald Ford took over for President Richard Nixon in 1974 and served more than two years as president. If Ford had defeated Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election, Ford could not have run for re-election.

Long before the 22nd Amendment, George Washington had set an unofficial precedent in 1796 when he decided several months before the election not to seek a third term. But Alexander Hamilton and many Founders wanted a strong executive, and they opposed term limits as a concept. Thomas Jefferson and an equally influential group of Founders supported term limits for the President.

The only person to break from Washington’s precedent was President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a record-setting four election wins. Before Roosevelt ran for re-election in 1940, most Presidents didn’t try for a third term in office, let alone a third consecutive term.

Obama or Hillary; what difference, at this point, does it make?

Similar to the rumblings during Clinton’s 2nd term.

Ironic or hypocritical that they skipped calling for a 3rd term for GW Bush.

Who knows, maybe they already have? Hey Laz, what have you hit lately?

What does that mean, "hit lately"? I'm not violent if that is what you are asking.

Two years for each is more than enough.

Not really.

And I would favor term limits on the judiciary too.

Maybe. Something is wrong there.

There should be Constitutional terms limits for all. That is especially so since the Founders did not factor in ‘political parties’. The envisioned a republic, with elected ‘electors’ choosing presidents, with congress being selected at the lowest level, and with legislatures even closer to the people selecting senators. Personally, I think they should have foreseen problems with lifetime appointments of anyone, and especially judges, but they did it anyway.

President - 8 years. (2 @ 4 years)
Senators - 8 years (2 @ 4 years)
Representatives - 8 years (4 @ 2 years)
Justices - 8 years. (2 @ 4 years)

Can they be one of each of the above? I have no problem. They’re different jobs.

Might be worthwhile to end lame-duck sessions.

If they lose on election night, they are out immediately.

That would keep them from doing retaliatory damage under the guise of a lame duck session.

“Should President Obama, or any President, be allowed to serve a third term?”

Answer:

Should President Obama, or any President, be allowed to BE served a third term, fourth, fifth, sixth, etc.,?

They ALL, all of them already are, from the time Reagan left office.

And ALL the Congress and Fed employees ALL ready are, after they left office(s).

Here come the trial balloons. Get the conservatives and republicans all riled up so the media can blast the republicans for hyperventilated about something that would NEVER happen... Then, of course, this must be investigated because Obama is the most important president in history and needs more time to finish saving the world. Then of course democrats will have to introduce legislation to temporarily ignore the 22nd amendment. Then, when the republicans go ballistic again the press and democrats will call them all racist. And McConnel and Boehner will go along to get along and say, “well OK. Just this one time.”

Regardless if Obama leaves office it is going to take 40 years to clean out the regulatory bureaucracy. Obama has been installing 20 year old little goons that will do his bidding regardless who is president.

ABSOLUTELY!

That should be #1 on the list.

And it should apply to congress and the senate too.

Ending that long delay might help bring the presidency back down to earth like it was in Harry Truman's day.
Treating the president and his family like a royal family has gotten far, far out of hand.

Rule 303 will ensure that 0bama will never serve a 3rd term. He knows that even trying would be an open declaration of civil war.

1- six-year term max for President
1 - six-year max term for Senators
1 - four-year terms max for Congresmen

unpaid. They have to raise their own support not to exceed 100K per year.

And they cannot come back to Washington or lobby either before or after the term. Any influence peddling before or after is a 30 year sentence.

All bureaucrats must hand in resignations. Some will be rehired. about 10%
