Should President Obama, or any President, be allowed to serve a third term?

With the anniversary of the 22nd Amendment on Friday, Constitution Daily looks at two hot-button topics: Should a President be allowed to serve a third term? And should members of Congress and the Supreme Court have term limits like the President?

View photo .obamainaug1 The 22nd Amendment brought the idea of term limits into the Constitution. When it was ratified in 1951, the amendment limited a President from effectively serving a third term, by saying that a President who won two elections can’t run a third time. The 22nd Amendment also bars a President from serving more than 10 years in office, in a case of a President who assumed office as Vice President.

For example, Vice President Gerald Ford took over for President Richard Nixon in 1974 and served more than two years as president. If Ford had defeated Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election, Ford could not have run for re-election.

Long before the 22nd Amendment, George Washington had set an unofficial precedent in 1796 when he decided several months before the election not to seek a third term. But Alexander Hamilton and many Founders wanted a strong executive, and they opposed term limits as a concept. Thomas Jefferson and an equally influential group of Founders supported term limits for the President.

The only person to break from Washington’s precedent was President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a record-setting four election wins. Before Roosevelt ran for re-election in 1940, most Presidents didn’t try for a third term in office, let alone a third consecutive term.

2 - four-year terms for President
2 - six-year terms for Senators
6 - two-year terms for Congresscritters.

Fits a little better.

Should a second termer suddenly or unexpectedly declare a national crisis and cancel elections indefinitely, then technical that president would only be serving 2 terms even if they were to die of old age while in office.

From my old studies of the Roman Empire, Sulla did something like that.

declare martial law, suspend next year's elections

If I had a buck for every time I've seen someone post that on this forum, I could buy myself a brand new Harley.

Ronald Reagan himself wanted to repeal the 22nd Amendment.

I remember seeing him on TV speaking about repealing presidential term limits while he was president, saying, “Not for me, but for future presidents.”

Thank God President Reagan’s comments were ignored by the powers that be.

If he cancelled elections, he wouldn’t have to run for a third and then he would be complying with the 22nd amendment. I’m sure that holder and sycophants would concur with the logic.
He has granted amnesty to illegals, he can now censor the Internet, so why can’t he cancel elections?

The trial balloons will come fast and furious. Anyone who supports the Constitution and especially the 22nd will be branded a racist.

I honestly do not think they need a crisis.

Who is going to say anything? The low info crowd will buy right into whatever persuasive argument they come up with then they will go back to the gold dress or blue dress debate.

We have become a government of self serving, self important geezers. Twelve years is enough time for anyone to play in our Congress.

You forgot the exclamation points. Hear, hear!

Two years for each is more than enough.

And I would favor term limits on the judiciary too. Why should we be stuck with senile judges potentially till they croak?
