Germany plans to activate a tank battalion that exists only on paper as it seeks to increase the country's military capability. The defense minister spoke of a "changed security situation" amid the conflict in Ukraine.
In a magazine interview published on Friday, German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said the tank battalion, based in Bergen in the state of Lower Saxony, would receive more equipment and personnel as part of efforts to redress what she called "an investment bottleneck."
She also told the magazine, which is published by the German Bundeswehr, that already existing units would be equipped with more material and that the already close cooperation with the French, Polish and Dutch armies would be stepped up still further.

The current German army would be more equitable to a small peace corps unit that would have trouble fighting a boy scout troop. They have 60k total troops and would be lucky to field 2 divisions.
Well, except that any truly global war will escalate very quickly to the point at which the last global war ended.
ON CNN international there was video of Vlady hang out with Russia version of Son of Anarchy motorcycle club
Cannot blame them
Now rename the Bundeswehr to the Wehrmacht and see the veins start to bulge.
It’s always a little creepy to see the joy and gusto in the posts involving the German military, and the nostalgia for the Nazi formations. On a conservative site. Nothing conservative about Nazis. It would be like seeing pride in the NKVD, in the Kymer Rouge, or in Mao’s PRC military.
I don’t get it.
That actor in the top of that tank is portraying a juvenile minded SS Officer who had his men machine gun American GIs who surrendered in the battle of the bulge. His apologists say that he was used to conditions on the eastern front where mass murder was normal behavior.
You can bet Ivan remembers how it ended, and you can bet twice Jerry does, too.
Why I was thinking of the movie Battle of Bulge here LOL!
An oil crisis, a maskirovka, a push into eastern Europe. Yep. Sure sounds like red storm rising.
I don’t think it has anything to do with admiring Nazi ideology or actions. More about respect for their martial style, bravery and ability as warriors, whatever the cause. Same holds true for the Mongols, Spartans, Zulus, etc.
Perfectly said. And, yes, the Spartans were big gov types of the first order.
Wonder if the guys at the “Gas Monkey Garage” could get one of those up and running? Looks like plenty of spare parts there!
Que in “Panzerlied”.
Yes, their vaunted martial tradition. The US Army exceeded them in every sane way. There’s very little to admire there. Look at them, they ran wild over an unprepared Europe still horrified from WWI that could not bring themselves to dream it would happen again.
Then they were stopped cold from invading England. Then they attacked Russia where they failed to defeat the Russians. Stopped by their bad tactics, and by their wasteful and evil energy spent on mass murder. Then they were driven out of North Africa. Then they faced the US Army and got a world class ass pounding that was born of true professional military skill and power.
But do they have any catchy songs about shooting naked women by a ditch, or locking all the village in a barn and burning it?
That lost cause thinking is just weird. Call it martial tradition, but if I was expressing admiration for the Kymer Rouge, you’d think I had a screw loose. I mean, they took over Cambodia FAST!
