Leonard Nimoy, who lived long and prospered, died Friday at his Los Angeles home.

The creator of Mr. Spock, television’s most beloved pointy-eared half-Vulcan, was 83 and had suffered for several years from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), which makes it difficult to breathe.

“I quit smoking 30 yrs ago,” he tweeted last week. “Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP.”

“LLAP” was Spock’s best-known catch phrase: Live long and prosper.

To many of his fans, Leonard Nimoy was a one-hit wonder.

One hit that lasted half a century.

Nimoy created the beloved Mr. Spock in the 1960s cult TV show “Star Trek” and brought him back to life in movies, sequels, cartoons and spinoffs for the rest of his life.

It’s kind of ironic that this is the first time I have ever gotten emotional over a celebrity death. RIP Spock.

Not the first member of the original cast to go, certainly - but this one could break the Internet. Rest in Peace, Leonard.

Has anyone told Sheldon and Leonard?

By coincidence, I have my Rock-Paper-Scissor-Lizard-Spock shirt on today...

Dang. Rest in peace Mr. Nimoy. Thank you for Spock.

I do not know if you are old enough to remember DeForest Kelley always playing the gad guy in cowboy movies and series.

I'm pretty sure that Kelley was the only actor to have appeared on both sides of the OK Corral gunfight.

Every now and then, you can see the young Leonard Lemoy playing a part on the Perry Mason series. We will miss you, Mr Spock. RIP.

To many of his fans, Leonard Nimoy was a one-hit wonder.

For those who don't remember him as "Paris" in Mission: Impossible.

Spock/Nimoy is on the Mt Rushmore of 20th Century television AND film

...and stage. I saw him play the lead in Equus on Broadway, and he was superb.

To me there were no other Star Treks.

I'd agree. Star Trek was an original series with the perfect ensemble cast. Its interesting to contrast the cast with the original cast of Star Trek that appears in the pilot episode. The only actor who appeared in the pilot and the series is Spock / Leonard Nimoy.

He was in a particularly creepy cat episode of Night Gallery.

Rest in peace, Mr. Spock
