Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews, said on Thursday that Jewish people should avoid making themselves too visible in “problem neighborhoods”.
“Hiding isn't the answer,” Shuster told rbb radio. “The question is... whether it makes sense for Jews to make themselves recognizable by wearing a kippah (skull cap) in what I would call problem neighborhoods.”
Schuster clarified that he meant “neighborhoods with a large proportion of Muslims in the population”, and pointed to Berlin as a city with an especially large number of such areas.
“This is a development that I didn't expect five years ago and which is certainly a little horrifying,” he added. …

Depends a little om one’s family or community.
I grew up in Minnesota and rarely heard it pronounced any way besides “YA-muk-kah.” These days most people just use the Hebrew kippah (KEE-pah).
Yiddish has a lot of variations in pronunciation.
Like a lot of things in Jewish life, it depends on who your zayde (grandfather) is.

Different languages - “kippah” is Hebrew, “yarmulke” is Yiddish.
Since most Jews in the USA have European ancestors you commonly hear the latter. As the last of the Yiddish speakers pass on, “kippah” has come into more common use.
Maybe the Germans are worried about the Americans bombing them like they did Serbia for getting rid of their muslims.
What if Muslims were warned off of beards, racism and head chopping?
