Tea Party conservatives failed to oust Speaker John Boehner last month, but theyre threatening to try again if the Ohio Republican caves in the fight against President Obamas immigration actions.
While theres not a coordinated effort yet, chatter of another coup attempt has grown louder now that the Senate is moving to pass a funding bill to avert a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without the immigration riders.
Conservatives on and off Capitol Hill are pressuring Boehner not to relent unless Democrats agree to gut Obamas executive orders protecting millions of illegal immigrants from deportation. But Boehner and his allies are concerned that partially closing one of the top national security agencies could do lasting damage to the party.
Some of the 25 Republicans who tried to strip the Speakers gavel from Boehner on the House floor in January are having informal discussions about ways they might overthrow him if he brings a clean bill to the floor, according to one conservative lawmaker who voted against Boehner in January.
I think the political repercussions both for him and the Speakership are going to be pretty substantial, said another House conservative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the issue. He knows that it would be a big political mistake, and he doesnt want to throw away all of his political capital on this.
While Democrats would certainly help get the clean bill to Obamas desk, bringing it up would likely violate the GOPs informal Hastert Rule, which states that a bill should only receive a vote if a majority of the majority supports it.

Actually, I’m not ‘disgruntled’. Seething with an interminable rage is more like it.
For all the talk during the election about changing the way Washington works, the spineless rank and file GOP fell into line behind the drunk weeper very fast. Business as usual.
“Cheetos” John needs to be pushed to the wall on this one.
NOTHING good will get done ‘till we get rid of this jerk.
So all those lemmings who have voted him into the Speaker position time and time again.....knowing his record.....are going to rise up against him???? Ha ha ha ha.....what kind of fantasy land is this writer living in???
The GOP is worthless.
Fool me once, shame on thee, fool me twice, you get the idea. I'm guilty of being fooled several times, but no more. The ugly truth about GOPe was laid bare in Mississippi.
Yesterday, I took a look at the Conservative Review scorecard for the Texas Republican delegation in the House. It was pretty ugly, Boehner must have some dirt on 3/4 of them.
Our Senate and House “leaders” are just as toxic and full of hubris as the twit in the WH. If we really want to have a chance to get rid of them, we need to ensure someone on our side of the aisle is the next President.
Disgruntled? What a stupid adjective to use. I’m peeved which makes me grumpy!
Sad about Texas, huh.
Very sad, am contemplating early retirement simply to primary Kenny Marchant. Alas, I would be a lousy candidate, as I’ve never run for public office, and am not independently wealthy.
Told ya it would be worth all of our efforts to physically move to his district and vote for the Democrat.
Good luck.
