Human head transplant just two years away, surgeon claims

Surgeon Sergio Canavero will be embarking on a project to implement the world's first human head transplant.

It's a fascinating concept. You have an otherwise perfectly healthy head on a body that no longer functions. You have, also, an otherwise perfectly healthy donor body. What if you could take the head from its non-functioning body and transplant it onto the healthy body?

Oh no. This is really bad. Imagine an immortal George Soros with a never-ending supply of young, fresh bodies. Bring on the apocalypse!

Somewhat successful transplants of this nature have been done in animals, first on dogs then chimpanzees. The primate experiment was done forty years ago at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. I had the pleasure of working in the lab of one of the scientists who was part of that experiment, who still has bad dreams about it. As I recall, the chimp had full sensory function and limited motor function and survived for several days. I think back then the key issue was tissue rejection, but I have heard from other neuroscientists recently that they could probably overcome that if the experiment was repeated today.

So, do we have a choice? A big head, or a little head?

"What is it is a man who wants a woman’s body? Ever think of that?"

Probably get Federal funding for that one.

This is very disturbing. It’s indeed a slippery slope, but once you start sliding one gains speed rather quickly.

Why? Did you feel the same about heart transplants?

The real story here is this amounts to rejoining a severed spinal cord. That’s a huge advance if real.

You ask a valid question, but a heart isn’t the central nervous system’s Programmable Logic Controller.

If you don’t see the implications this involves, I won’t bother explaining. It should be plain as day.
