Heavy drinkers have the lowest IQs, study claims

People with low IQs are more likely to consume higher amounts of alcohol than those with higher IQs, a new study has claimed. The study, which was carried out by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, surveyed 49,321 Swedish men who were born between 1949 to 1951 and were conscripted for Swedish military service from 1969 to 1971. IQ tests done upon conscription, alcohol intake, pattern of drinking, tobacco use, and medical conditions were all examined. The results showed that men with lower results on their IQ test consumed higher levels of alcohol, leading the team to conclude that "a higher IQ results in healthier lifestyle choices".

In 2010, a study by the London School of Economics claimed that, in sharp contrast to this study, the cleverest women are the heaviest drinkers, finding that women who achieved high test marks as school children are more likely to drink daily as adults.

Misleading headline. The study of male drinkers is seriously outdated. The second part is far more likely true and probably would also apply to men in 2010.

Let’s ban alcohol. I know we can’t prove causality but do we really want to take that chance with our CHILDREN?

Chicken or the egg. Are people dumber because they drink too much, or are they drinking too much beacause they are dumb.

Cliff expounds his “Buffalo Theory” to Norm:

“Well, you see, Norm, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it’s the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

I think they overlooked the reason why dope is called dope.

Well, it does refer to a ‘recent’ study on the men, but why go back to looking at those serving in 1969-1971? I suppose Leftist propaganda......needing to control more of your life and using a ‘study’ to do it. When friends worry about the latest warnings about risk factors for different types of cancers, I always tell them to wait 6 months and a different study will come out and say the complete opposite of the one they are worried about.

It looks like this story tried to answer that by taking IQ tests early in life and then tracking drinking. It doesn’t handle early drinking or even the effects that pre-natal drinking by the mother could have on both IQ and the desire to drink, but it is far better than just passing out IQ tests at a bar and collecting a federal science grant check.

The egg obviously, but I know what you mean. No one with a high IQ is going to maintain it very long as a heavy drinker.
